3 2nd Sept. 2002CERN - ATLAS Muon Week3 Hardware and Software Configuration (2) Hardware: 3 RIOs Six PCs: One running the online software (RunControl, etc…) 2 ROS One receives data via S-Link One receives data via Eth Both have a CORBO PCI 1 for monitoring tasks and DFM 1 for EB, SFI/O and data collection 1 used as GW + DNS of the private network DAQ farm for Event Filter Fast ethernet network for control messages and ROD data Gigabit ethernet for data and connection to the EF farm

7 2nd Sept. 2002CERN - ATLAS Muon Week7 Pctbmu04 Event Fragments From ROSs Quad PC Farm Calib Online New Features: Event Filter (1) SFOSFI Event Filter Task CDR SFI: SubFarmInput – It receives and buffers the events fragments from ROSs, builds a full event and sends it to the EF SFO: SubFarmOutput – It receives complete events accepted by the EF and writes all data to disk

8 2nd Sept. 2002CERN - ATLAS Muon Week8 New Features: Event Filter (2) TDCs Spectra Channel Map Nowadays the EF produces online histos such as TDCs spectra, channel maps, residuals (this means on-line tracking!)

9 2nd Sept. 2002CERN - ATLAS Muon Week9 New Features: DataFlow Manager (DFM) The DFM informs ROSs where they have to send their data fragment It also receives messages if SFI is not ready to accept a new event Why DFM at H8 test beam? It’s a very useful test It avoids fragment misalignment because of the difference in speed between the two ROSs (one receiving data via S-Link and the other one via Fast Ethernet)

10 2nd Sept. 2002CERN - ATLAS Muon Week10 New Features: Monitoring Tasks They are the same program They run in the on-line environment and are automatically controlled by a controller It’s possible to control them “by hand” and then give the control back to the controller Temporary histos files are created Histos are automatically saved at the end of run C. 15 2nd Sept. 2002CERN - ATLAS Muon Week15 DAQ – DCS (2) Daq – DCS communication: Alignment EndCap DCS implemented with a PVSS application DDC (DAQ to DCS Communication) package used to implement a communication system from and to DAQ (Start/End of Run, Run Number) Barrel DCS uses ICARAS software No DAQ communication Temperature Temperature data sent to the DAQ and recorded in an ascii file along with the DAQ main stream of data

16 2nd Sept. 2002CERN - ATLAS Muon Week16 Achievements Full system working with good stability The system has been able to handle a rate of ~ 5 KHz System limit has not been reached Sometimes low rate because of electronics problems Very complete configuration: 3 crates (2 read-out via S-Link and 1 via Ethernet) 2 ROSs EB, SFI/O, DFM, EF Online monitoring Online event display DAQ to DCS communication

17 2nd Sept. 2002CERN - ATLAS Muon Week17 Problems Main Problems Missing fragment Not frequent Possible random fragment size bigger than the page size due to chamber noise Recovery time about 3 minutes RIO CPUs OS not handling well system resources PC ROS 1 ADCs, TDCs C. RODROD CorboCorbo CSMCSM MDT_1 Crate Other Problems DCS communication Application not killed at the DAQ shutdown Just kill the application “by hand” and restart OBK browser not showing comments
