Magnetic Material Specification and Procurement Strategy Dawn Munson 1

Magnetic Material Specification Material properties requirements are detailed in LBNL Engineering Specification – 10620 Magnetic Properties Mechanical Properties Magnetic Testing Packaging and Shipment Acceptance Criteria This specification in conjunction with mechanical detail drawings and the contract will dictate the magnets for the LCLS-II undulators. 2 LCLS-II Magnetic Structure Review 7-6-11

Magnetic Material Specification The volume of magnetic material needed for both undulator type blocks will likely require more than one manufacturing lot To maintain continuity, it will be required that any one shipment contain material from a single manufacturing lot At a minimum, a shipment is the quantity of blocks required for a single HXU or SXU undulator 3 LCLS-II Magnetic Structure Review 7-6-11

Magnetic Material Specification Magnet block coating Requirement is for Aluminum 0.010 mm to 0.020 mm thick Based upon ALS experience Proprietary coatings are likely to be proposed by potential vendors. Acceptance of this coating will be dependent on radiation exposure testing* and is compatible with Loctite Hysol® EA9360™ epoxy adhesive Prototype blocks may use a coating other than aluminum with the provision that testing is to be completed before production begins on the full order 4 LCLS-II Magnetic Structure Review 7-6-11 * Requirement applies to coatings with organic content, such as VACCOAT 10047

Procurement Strategy Goal: to qualify two vendors for future procurement of blocks for full scale prototypes and production Request for Proposal will solicit quotations for:  Prototype HXU blocks – four standard magnet modules and eight end modules  Prototype SXU blocks - four standard magnet modules and eight end modules  Will include tooling as separate items  Will include options for production quantities Initial procurement will be for HXU prototype blocks LBNL Buyer – Gina Goodman Slide 5LCLS-II Magnetic Structure Review 7-6-11

Procurement Strategy - Costs Based upon estimated cost of $8.2M/m 3* HXU: ~$150/block  34 periods per module, 2 blocks/period: $10.2K/module  106 periods per device, 4 blocks/period: $63.6K/device  32 devices: $2.04M total SXU: ~$650/block  19 periods per module, 2 blocks/period: $24.7K/module  61 periods per device, 4 blocks/period: $158.6K/device  18 devices: $2.86M total * Estimates are based on ALS historical material costs Slide 6LCLS-II Magnetic Structure Review 7-6-11

Procurement Strategy - Acceptance Acceptance Criteria  Documents detailing the representative magnetization of each material lot  The data file from the block measurements, in ASCII format  Documentation detailing any surface void or chips larger than 1 mm 3  Testing verification and documentation of any alternate coating for the magnet blocks  All tooling and materials as outlined in the purchase contract Slide 7LCLS-II Magnetic Structure Review 7-6-11

Procurement Strategy - Tracking Material test reports Block measurement files Production photographs LBNL and/or the selected assembly sub-contractor will visually inspect all magnet blocks Random blocks will be selected and tested to verify the data supplied by the manufacturer Slide 8LCLS-II Magnetic Structure Review 7-6-11

Procurement Strategy - Schedule Schedule:  Release RFP end of July  Award end of August  Take delivery of prototype magnets ~February, 2012  Full scale prototype block purchase ~July, 2012  Production procurement award ~July, 2013 Slide 9LCLS-II Magnetic Structure Review 7-6-11
