However, it is easier to destroy an old system of government than to create a new one. In a world of kings and tyrants, your new republic struggles to find its place. How much power should the national government have? Think About: • the power that the Articles gave the states • foreign affairs and the Confederation Congress • the Confederation Congress’s taxation powers ANSWER If the Articles of Confederation had remained the basis of government, the nation may not have become a world power because the states would have had more power than the national government. The Confederation Congress would have had very little power to deal with foreign governments, and it would not have been able to raise taxes. End of Section 1
