3 Focused Notes are MANY things…  A way to collect information in class  A way to interact with the information you learned (today’s focus)  A way to collaborate with peers  A tool to help you study information What are Focused Notes?

5  Use your PINK handout page and turn to “Costa’s Levels of Inquiry”  Today you will be reviewing the different levels of inquiry questions that you can use in your Cornell Notes Writing Questions

6  The type of question you write, will largely depend on the type of information you’d like to discover.  Let’s briefly review them… Writing Questions

11  Writing a summary is the THIRD way you are able to review your notes  The summary is located at the end of your notes  The purpose of a summary is to restate the main ideas in your notes Writing a Summary

12 1.Introductory Sentences (2 sentences)  Topic sentence + 1 other intro sentence for the reader 2.Supporting Details (# is determined by your notes)  Provides details from the notes that answer the EQ 3.Closing Sentences (1 sentence)  Restates the topic of your summary in a new way and provides a closing thought Parts of a Summary

14  Let’s start with your introductory sentences… 1.Focus on RESTATING the essential question into a statement  Briefly review the essential question (what is it?) EQ: What are important school wide policies and procedures and how do they affect me as a student? Writing a Summary

17  By turning the essential question into a statement, you have now created your first introductory sentence. LET’S WRITE IT…  Draw a horizontal line across your paper at the end of your notes  Under this line, Write your summary topic sentence Writing a Summary: INTRODUCTORY SENTENCE

18 1 st Introductory Sentence = There are several important schoolwide policies and procedures that affect students. Writing a Summary: INTRODUCTORY SENTENCE

19  Following your first introductory sentence, provide another sentence that helps provide the reader more focus about the topic.  Introduce the importance of the topic  Explain the context of the topic  Provide a rationale for further reading Now let’s add another one…

20 There are several important school wide policies and procedures that affect students. Some choices for the 2 nd introductory sentence are…  # 1: These policies are important for keeping helping keep our school safe and focused on learning.  # 2: Such policies are created for students to ensure that they understand expectations for their behavior and the consequences of their actions.  #3: Policies regarding (list some main ideas in notes) are shared to make sure that students understand these guidelines. Example

21  Now add your 2 nd introductory sentence similar to the samples on the previous page. FINISHING the Introductory Sentences
