Just what is it used for? A fun brief look into a metadata standard created for the public broadcasting community.

A little background…. Was developed to provide the public broadcasting companies (television and radio) a way to catalog media http://pbcore.org/ Documentation included on site: Schema (XSD) Elements Attributes Vocabularies maintained in the Open Metadata Registry (http://metadataregistry.org/)http://metadataregistry.org/ Based on Dublin Core Still in its infancy: v1.0 in 2005 48 “flat” elements

V1.1 in 2006 53 “hierarchical” elements 15 containers, 3 sub-containers 4 content classes V2.0 in 2011 82 “hierarchical” elements 15 containers 4 content classes 30 XML sttributes

Goals of PBCore A schema that enables metadata interoperability between stations and networks (radio and television). Allows metadata from different systems to become findable, shareable and reusable by aggregating and normalizing its output.

Tell me about those content classes… Intellectual Content Houses elements such as pbcoreAssetType pbcoreAssetDate pbcoreIdentifier pbcoreTitle Intellectual Property Houses elements such as pbcoreCreator

pbcoreContributor pbcoreRightsSummary Extensions Houses elements such as pbcoreExtension extensionWrap extensionElement extensionAuthorityUsed

Instantiation Houses elements such as pbcoreInstiation instantiationIdentifier instantiationDate instantiationPhysical instantiationTimeStart instantiationColors

But what is required? Identifier Title Description Order of elements is determined by the XSD

Tools for PBCore record creation Online tool that provides examples as well as the ability to import, export, create and modify PBCore records. http://pbcore.vermicel.li/ PBCore records validator, another online tool while this tool is not an official release, it can detect certain errors and deviations from the best practices document found on www.pbcore.orgwww.pbcore.org http://pbcorevalidator.org/ FileMaker Pro PBCore Cataloging Tool This tool provides built in templates for use with the proprietary software FileMaker Pro. There is also a runtime version for both Mac and Windows platforms. Useful for its predefined fields, picklists and helpful hints for PBCore metadata record creation. http://www.pbcore.org/PBCore/PBCore_Tool_docs/PBCore_Tool_QuickStart.html
