Notes: Newton’s 1 st Law 16 Dec EQ: How are force and motion related?

Force Force is a kind of push or pull Force is a kind of push or pull direct contact, tension in a rope, friction direct contact, tension in a rope, friction Direct contact is not needed Direct contact is not needed gravity, magnetism, static electricity gravity, magnetism, static electricity Force is what changes all motion. Force is what changes all motion.

Newton’s 1 st Law An object at rest stays at rest, and an object in motion stays in motion (at constant speed in a straight line) unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.

Newton’s 1 st Law An object at rest stays at rest, and an object in motion stays in motion (at constant speed in a straight line) unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. or … Objects keep a constant velocity. if forces are balanced. or … UnBalanced forces cause acceleration.

in other words… If there is no unbalanced force on an object, it will never change direction or speed. Ever. In the real world, friction (with ground, air…) will act to slow things down or change motion.

Newton’s 1 st Law is also called the Law of Inertia: Things resist changes in motion. How does this explain the block stack trick?

Now… Write down two examples of your own. Make them relevant to you. Write down two examples of your own. Make them relevant to you.
