2 Motivation Intrinsic motivation – Based on taking pleasure in an activity Extrinsic motivation – Comes from factors outside the individual, such as doing something for money, prizes or rewards – Can also be based on avoiding negative consequences Almost all people are driven by both types of motivations

3 Intrinsic Motivation Students with intrinsic motivation: – Enjoy activities more – Want to learn the subject material, not just get a good grade – Gain a deeper understanding of the subject matter – Are more willing to take on difficult challenges – Obtain a high level of satisfaction during the task – Are guided by areas where they are intrinsically motivated when selecting a career – Have less anxiety and depression – Have a more positive self-identity – Are more curious

4 Extrinsic Motivation Students with extrinsic motivation: – Can build intrinsic motivation – Put forth increased effort – Feel proud because of the recognition of achievement – Find they like doing the activity or it is not that bad – Study in groups because it is externally inspiring and they learn new things from group members – Are willing to spend more on the task – Can meet high standards in school

6 Individual Reflection Write Down Answers What are two common areas in school where students are intrinsically motivated? Why are they intrinsically motivated in these areas? What are two common areas in school where students are extrinsically motivated? Why are they extrinsically motivated in these areas?

7 Find People With Similar Answers Find a group of two to six people that wrote down similar reasons for why students are intrinsically and extrinsically motivated. Discuss the reasons why students are motivated in these areas.

8 Groups Share Answers With Class Group members report – Why are students intrinsically and extrinsically motivated in certain areas?
