1 7th Grade Fall Semester Review 2012

2 Why do we use charts and graphs in science?
It is a way to organize and display data in a neat fashion and easier to read. What scientific instrument would you use to measure a liquid and what units? Graduated cylinder or beaker measure in Milliliters. 3. How do you read a triple beam balance?  Read hundreds first then ten and last ones.

3 5. To validate any experiment, it is best to do what?
 4. What UNITS would you use to measure mass? Grams 5. To validate any experiment, it is best to do what? Repeat experiment many times 6. What dangers are associated with using real blood?  you could pass on diseases like Hepatitis and HIV or AIDS. .

4 7. Be able to identify lab tools and safety equipment.
Such as Safety goggles, gloves, Fire blanket, eye wash 8. Which lab instrument is best used for measuring length? Metric ruler 9. What is a safe way to cut a pickle? Lay pickle flat on table and cut away from self

5 10. Why is it significant to test any new medications before allowing people to take them?
To see if there are any negative side effects like death! 11. Produce a well written hypothesis  Must have words IF and THEN

6 12. If you were to get a harmful chemical in your eye, what should you do? List the steps.
Walk to eye wash station and hold head over spouts with eyes OPEN and let water flush out chemical. Read Thermometers: 20—60

7 14. Write the equation for photosynthesis:
6CO H2O + light energy C6H O2 15. If you add anything or subtract anything from the reactants, what will happen to the products? If you change any thing in front of the arrow you will change the products after the arrow the same way. If you put in less you will get less.

8 16. Plants use __Radiant or Solar (light) Energy__to drive a chemical reaction known as_photosynthesis__. 17. Describe the energy transformation that take place during photosynthesis? Radiant energy from sun to Chemical Energy 18. Which plants cells benefit from photosynthesis? All cells of plant

9 Define phototropism-the bending of a plant towards light
20. Define Positive Geotropism-when a plants roots grow down because of gravity 21. Define Negative Geotropism-when a plants roots do not grow down

10 Where does all energy originate from for the Earth?-----SUN-----
23. What must astronaut have to work and survive in space? They must wear pressurized space suits in space.

11 24. Describe a desert biome and list the organisms that live there:
Dry region with very little rainfall. Succulent plants for example cactus, Jack rabbits, Rattle snakes, Scorpions 25. Which trophic level has the most available energy? The 1st trophic level or Produces have the most available energy.

12 26. How do consumers gain energy? All animals are Consumers and all plants are producers.  Consumers gain energy by eating other organisms. 27. Which biome contains the most diverse mix of plants and animals?----Tropical Rain Forest---

13 28. Define the three types of symbiotic relationships:
Commensalism-relationship where one organism benefit and the other is not affected Mutualism-relationship where both orgainisms benefit Parasitism-Relationship where one organism benefits and the other is harmed

14 29. Draw a food web that has four levels, Include the following: an herbivore, a decomposer, omnivore and label the primary consumer, secondary consumer, tertiary consumer.

15 30. Explain what the arrows mean in the food web.
The arrows show the direction the energy is moving Define Herbivore: Consumer that only eats plants Define Omnivore: Consumer that eats meat and plants Define Carnivore: Consumer that only eats meat or other animals

16 34. _Limiting_ __Factors_ is the amount of resources that determine how many organisms can live in an ecosystem. 35. Define Competition-when more that one organism seeks the same resource at a time 36. What would cause an increase in competition for a population? A shortage of resources will cause competition

17 37. Put the levels of organization in order from smallest to greatest using the following words: species, organism, population, ecosystem, community. Organism Species Population Community Ecosystem 38. Define Pioneer Species-first species to populate an area EX: Moss and Lichens

18 Symbiosis is a close ecological relationship between the individuals of 2 or more different species.
Look at food chain: what would happen to the small fish population if the water plants where all gone? The small fish would have to find another food source or die.

19 Look at food chian: What would happen to the organisms if there was a large population of birds?
The large fish population would decrease and the small fish population would increase as result. 42. What are the effects of a volcanic eruption? Lava flows, fires, ash and poisonous gases

20 _Volcanoes__ and __Earthquakes_ are caused by the movement of crustal plates in the Pacific Ocean.
44. Define erosion- is the moving of sediment from one place to another Remember erosion takes a long time

21 Define weathering: the process of wearing down of rock into soil.
Define deposition: the laying down of sediment 47. Name natural disasters that can also be caused by human activity.  Wildfire

22 49. Which natural disasters can change the Earth’s surface?
Earthquake, Volcanic eruptions, and mudslides 50. What are some ways to prevent the erosion of soil? Plant vegetation or tress and grasses 51. Erosion is a short / long process.

23 A ramp will _decrease_ the force needed to move an object while _increasing__ the distance where the force is applied. 53. Is this a balanced or unbalanced force? Which way will the arrows move 10 N N BALANCED

24 54. Define Work: For work to be done object must move in the direction of the applied force
Work = _Force_x_Distance 55. How much work is done if a box requires 4 N of force to be moved over a distance of 15 meters?  Work-Force X Disrtance 4 X 15=60 J

25 Determine the type of energy is being used: Mechanical, chemical, or thermal
Bobby ate a hamburger: Chemical Bobby ran a mile: Mechanical Bobby warmed his hand by the fire: Thermal
