1 CRCT: Confident, Relaxed, Calm and Terrific! West Bainbridge Elementary School

2 As Confident, Relaxed, Calm and Terrific Students, today you will learn some ways to help you be a fabulous test taker! This will include: -What to do to prepare for the CRCT -Test Taking Tricks & Tips -How to RELAX during the test

3 Preparing for your BEST on the CRCT TEST: What should you do the night before a test? Get a full night’s sleep! What should you do the morning of a test? Eat a nutritious breakfast! What should you be thinking about before taking the test? Positive thoughts, like “I know this stuff” or “I can do this!”

4 Test Taking Tricks & Tips Multiple Choice: Begin by looking over the entire test before you start answering questions– budget your time Read directions and questions S L O W L Y and carefully– there is plenty of time; however, do not spend too much time on any one question Read all the answers given before answering a question Use a process of elimination– if you’re stuck, first figure out which answers are WRONG

5 More Tricks & Tips Look for key words like “most,” “always,” “some” and “never”– they can change the meaning of the question Think twice before you change an answer– your first response is more likely to be correct; if you change an answer, erase the first one completely Try to answer the easiest questions first, then come back to the harder ones Check periodically that you are lining up the answer sheet numbers correctly with the test booklet questions

6 Even More Tricks & Tips Do not leave a question blank– it will be counted as a wrong answer It’s okay to guess if you don’t know the answer– eliminate the choices you know are wrong first For the reading sections, go over the questions before reading the passage so you know what to look for If you have time, go back and check your answers

7 Tips for Guessing: Pick the answer “All of the above” For math questions, pick a number in the middle Pick the longest answer Do not pick answers with words like every, none, always, and never Pick answers with words like often, many, usually, some and frequently

8 Be physically active in the days leading up to testing— each afternoon during testing week, do something active Breathe deeply and slowly through your nose, hold for 1-2 seconds, then exhale slowly while relaxing your body Keep your body loose during the test by: stretching your legs and arms out; rotating your neck, shoulders and ankles; and repositioning your body as needed A Relaxed Brain Thinks Better!

9 More Relaxation Tips Imagine a peaceful and calm place that you have been or would like to go, using as many senses as possible Express your anxious feelings to a parent, teacher or friend Use positive self-talk: tell yourself, “I am smart,” “I will not know all the answers, but I will do my best,” “I can handle this stress,” “A test is not a measure of my worth”

10 You are now ready to ROCK the CRCT!! GOOD LUCK, AND HAPPY TESTING!!
