Laboratory 29 CFR 1910.1450 Laboratory – A facility where the laboratory use of hazardous chemicals occur. It is a workplace where small quantities of hazardous chemicals are used on a non- production basis.

Hazardous Chemical 29 CFR 1910.1200 A chemical is considered hazardous if it meets the following criteria: Cancer causing Toxic Corrosive Irritant Strong sensitizer Flammable/Reactive Poses a threat to health and the environment

Signage Warn students and visitors of possible hazards in the laboratory Identify Emergency Equipment Identify evacuation routes

Exit Signs Exit signs posted above the door inside the storage room If there are two entrances to the room there must be two exit signs

Chemical Danger/ Caution Signs Posted on storage room door entrance If two entrances to storage room then two signs are needed

Biohazard Posted at the front door of the classroom when infectious waste is present in the area Posted on all containers with solid or liquid infectious waste material

Chemical Inventory Must contain all hazardous chemicals stored in the room One copy must be posted inside the storeroom door A 2 nd copy must be stored in the school’s main office.

Physical Storage Storage Shelves Labeled Chemicals stored in compatible families-Fisher ChemAlert Safe Storage Plan Stored at or below eye level Corrosives and flammables in cabinets Store minimum amounts needed

Storage Room Environment Storage room should be kept in an orderly manner Storage room door should be locked when not in use Only authorized personnel are allowed in the area Labs should store the minimum amount of chemicals The area should be ventilated Chemicals should be stored in chemically compatible families A chemical inventory should be posted on the inside storage room door

Fisher Storage system

Container Labels Placed on all chemical containers  Chemical Name  NFPA hazard information  Expiration Date  Fisher Category  For new chemicals add date chemical received

Chemical List

Material Safety Data Sheets 29 CFR 1910. 253 Required by OSHA, EPA, NCDOL One must be present for each chemical stored Must be located near but not in the storage room The binder should be distinctly marked as (Material Safety Data Sheets) MSDS must be present in the classroom when chemicals are being used. Should be kept for 30 years

MSDS Information 1.Product Identification 2.Composition/ Information on Ingredients 3.Hazards Identification 4.First Aid measures 5.Fire fighting Measures 6.Accidental Release Measures 7.Handling and storage 8.Exposure Controls/ Personal Protection 9.Physical and chemical Properties 10.Stability and reactivity 11.Toxicological Information 12.Ecological Information 13.Disposal Considerations 14.Transport Information 15.Regulatory Information 16.Other Information

Compressed Gas Do not store compressed gas in the lab area Compressed gas cylinders should be labeled to indicate their contents Cylinders must be secured in place and the valve protected

Waste Management 40 CFR Part 262 Biohazard waste ( dissections/ blood materials ) Double bag and box all waste before removal Box contents must be labeled on the box Store bio-waste away from students Bio-waste must be stored in approved containers
