Zebegen by Victor Vasarely

Victor Vasarely (1908-1997) Hungarian born in 1908 Moved to France in 1930 (considered a French Painter) Worked as a Graphic Designer Early work was in complex black & white patterns Added intense color contrasts later in work “Father” of OP ART Died in 1997

Optical Art Op Art is comprised of illusion and often appears – to the human eye – to be moving or breathing due to its precise, mathematically- based composition. This art movement evolved around 1965.

Optical Art Evolved around 1960 Creates an Optical Illusion (A misleading image.) Is Abstract (not concrete/realistic) Uses Visual Contrast (A large difference between two things; for example, rough and smooth, yellow and purple, light and shadow. ) Comprised of Shapes geometric (square, triangle, circle) and organic (irregular in outline) often appears – to the human eye – to be moving or breathing due to its precise, mathematically-based composition

Examples of his work:

9 Style Groups His art is categorized chronologically into different but sometimes overlapping styles 1. Graphic 2. Belle Isle 3. Denfert 4. Cystal-Gordes 5. Black – White 6. Planetary Folklore 7. Vonal 8. Gestalt 9. Universal Structures

Planetary Folklore All over pattern Uses 2 color units with contrasting colors Consists of two geometric elements that fit one into the other Zebegen 1964

Examples of His Planetary Folklore Style

Primary Colors The basic colors from which all colors are mixed Red, Yellow & Blue No other colors can be mixed to make primary colors.

Secondary Colors Green, Violet & Orange Created by mixing two primary colors together in equal parts

Cool colors Warm colors Color wheel

Vocabulary: Composition: Geometric Shapes: Hue: Value: Intensity: To create, form or design something by arranging parts to create a unified whole. Any shapes and/or forms based on math principles, such as square/cube, circle/sphere, triangle/cone, pyramid etc… Another name for color. The lightness or darkness of a color. The brightness or dullness of a color.

Project: Fold 9 x 9 paper in ½ and then in ½ again to form 16 squares. Brainstorm a simple design unit can be made using circles, triangles, and squares. (refer to print) Pick a pair of complementary colors: red/green, blue/orange or violet/yellow. Design op art pattern using crayons and one or two design units. (vary placement & arrangement to draw the eye around the design)
