General Purpose The purpose of the program is to provide developmental assistance to: Small Businesses Small Disadvantaged Businesses Service Disabled Veteran Owned SB Veteran Owned Small Businesses Woman Owned Small Businesses HUBZone Certified Small Businesses 5

Eligibility Mentors: Small or “other than small” Be in good standing Have sufficient resources and good financial posture Experience as a federal contractor Protégés: Established small business Be in good standing Financially viable posture Sell the type of services/products that USAID procures 6

7 Program Benefits Encourage and motivate small business development Enhance the capabilities and capacity of small businesses Foster long-term business relationships Expand the business partner base for USAID

8 Benefits for Protégés Mentors provide training and assistance to protégé firms in order to help them develop and become more proficient. Areas that they can address include (but are not limited to) are: –Managerial –Technical –Accounting –Marketing –Proposal Writing

Help Mentor firms achieve the Subcontracting Goals established in their Subcontracting Plans Participation in the program may be an evaluation factor in contract solicitations Mentors may develop very beneficial business relationships with their Protégés that far exceed the term period of the Mentor Protégé agreement Eligible for an annual (non-monetary) award presented to the Mentor firm providing the most effective developmental support to a Protégé firm 9 Benefits for Mentors

-Mentor firms may be permitted to have more than one Protégé -Protégé firms are limited to one Mentor in the USAID Mentor Protégé Program 10 Number of Agreements Permitted

Term Period of Agreements Minimum of one year Maximum of three years 11

USAID does not match Mentors and Protégé firms. They must find their own partners in the Mentor Protégé relationship. Finding a Mentor Protégé partner is like courting. There needs to be a good fit between the Mentor and Protégé. They must both find the relationship beneficial for it to endure. 12 Mentor Protégé Relationship
