1 Describe the following amendments to the Constitution:
13th amendment- freed slaves (civil rights granted) 14th amendment- made freed slaves citizens (civil rights) 15th amendment-right to vote for African Americans (civil rights)

2 Identify the following:
Abraham Lincoln- an Illinois Republican who was known for debates against opponents. Eventually became 16th President Jefferson Davis- President of the Confederacy during the Civil War Robert E. Lee- resigned from the U.S. Army and became commanding general of the Confederate Army Ulysses S. Grant-Commander of the union army

5 New Orleans/Vicksburg- Mississippi River port that allowed the Union to divide the Confederacy in half

6 Compromise of settled the controversy over statehood for California and the issue of slavery in other territories

7 FACTS The Watergate break-in was in June 1972. The cover-up and story ultimately led President Nixon to resign in August 1974. Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein unraveled the scandal. A main source for the reporters was called Deep Throat. Watergate scandal- this event caused Richard Nixon to be the only U.S. president to resign from office

Uncle Tom’s Cabin- author Harriet Beecher Stowe. The book made Southerns angry because they felt it gave an inaccurate description of slave life.

9 Confederate States- slaveholding states that seceded from the union

10 Booker T. Washington- founded the Tuskegee Institute and hired teachers and scholars
John Brown- radical abolitionist that captured a U.S. arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia

11 Republican Party - new political party formed by Free-soilers, northern whigs and democrats who opposed the spread of slavery

12 Black Codes - southern laws to limit rights of African Americans

13 Kissinger Cold War - resulted from the rivalry and competition that grew between the United States and the Soviet Union Berlin Wall Khrushchev Stallin

Why was the Emancipation Proclamation issued and who issued it? Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation that freed the slaves in the rebellious Southern states in order to weaken the South’s ability to fight the war. How did population effect the North during the Civil War? more soldiers and workers for farms & factories What did the North and South agree on? Freed African Americans should not be allowed to vote What event started the fighting between the north and south? Southerner’s firing on Ft. Sumter What made army life difficult? crowded, unsanitary, away from home, lack of supplies What were the causes of the Great Depression? high unemployment, the Dust Bowl, widespread bank failures

What event brought the U.S. into World War II? the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor naval base in Hawaii What event brought World War II to an end? the dropping of atomic bombs on Japan During World War II, African Americans and women found factory jobs when Americans were fighting in the war. Human Adaptation - humans adapting to their environment Natural Resources of the United States - materials that people take from the environment to satisfy their needs (In the U.S. they are widely distributed & varied) Landforms/landscape of the United States - mostly made up of plains, mountains & plateaus Physical Geography - includes a place’s land, resources, climate, & vegetation
