3 www.vncpc.org “Cleaner Production for Better Product” Full title: Cleaner Production For Better Products (CP4BP): Increasing the capacity of selected industries in Vietnam, Cambodia and Lao PDR to develop environmentally friendly and socially responsible products adapted to the requirements of the European market, through the application of product- related Cleaner Production (CP) approaches. Lead applicant: VNCPC International partners: UNEP DTIE (France), TU Delft (Netherlands) Regional partners: AITCV (Vietnam), LNCCI (Lao PDR), PSMI (Cambodia, Associate) Planned start of the project: November 2007 Duration: 20 months Budget: 500,000 € (EC financing: 75% = 400,000 €) CP4BP (1) – Overview

4 www.vncpc.org Specific objective: To promote the uptake of product-related CP techniques and Design for Sustainability (D4S) methodology through the development of demand for and supply of sustainable product design services CP4BP (2) – Objectives Overall objectives: 1.To increase the capacity of selected industries in Vietnam, Cambodia and Lao PDR to develop environmentally friendly and socially responsible products adapted to the requirements of the European market 2.To create continuous synergies and thereby increase trade opportunities between the three countries and Europe

5 www.vncpc.org CP4BP (2) – Target sectors Final selection (3 sectors): Will be based on country assessments (first project activity) Identified sectors (pre-selection): 1. Seafood / Aquaculture ; 2. Food-Processing, Agro-Business ; 3. Footwear Sector ; 4. Furniture ; 5. Packaging ; 6. Electronic components Criteria for selection: 1.Importance and development prospects in the participating countries 2.Links to Europe (export potential and potential for utilisation of European technology) 3.Potential for D4S application

6 www.vncpc.org CP4BP (3) – Activities Pilot projects and studies: 1.3 pilot company-projects demonstrating the benefits of CP4BP approach in 3 target industry sectors (3 new or re-designed products, 30 staff trained) 2.3 research studies into the wider application of the CP4BP approach within the target sectors Project start-up and initial training: 1.Country assessments to identify target sectors and products in the participating countries 2.Localization and integration of existing resources on D4S methodology as part of the CP concept (CP4BP approach) 3.Train-the-trainer workshop for technical service providers and industry representatives of the three countries (25 persons)

7 www.vncpc.org CP4BP (4) – Activities Dissemination: 1.Finalization of the CP4BP resource material based on the findings of pilot testing and research studies 2.5 sector-specific workshops to industrial companies and technical service providers, introducing the CP4BP approach and its benefits in the 3 countries (150 participants) 3.National working conference for authorities in Vietnam (50 to 100 participants) 4.Dissemination of the CP4BP resource kit and lessons learned (Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Phnom Penh, Vientiane – 400 participants).

8 www.vncpc.org CP4BP (5) – Expected results 1.Product-related CP and D4S approaches developed and tested in 3 priority industry sectors 2.Awareness raised and capacity built in industries, supporting intermediaries, local and national authorities, and communities (ca. 700 direct beneficiaries). 3.CP and D4S tools disseminated to key organizations and authorities 4.Improvement of business opportunities and environmental indicators for the 3 pilot companies 5.Strengthened partnerships and increased trade opportunities between Europe, Vietnam, Cambodia and Lao PDR
