During a physical change, some properties of a material change, but the composition of the material does not change. As gallium melts in a person’s hand, the shape of the sample changes, but the composition of the material does not change.

Physical changes can be classified as reversible or irreversible. o All physical changes that involve a change from one state to another are reversible. o Cutting hair, filing nails, and cracking an egg are examples of irreversible physical changes.

Five Clues of a Chemical Change 1. Heat or light is produced (or absorbed). 2. A new solid is formed called a precipitate. 3. A gas is released. Bubbles, fizzing or a new smell. 4. A change in colour. 5. It is hard to reverse. Keep in mind…these are just clues, not hard and fast rules!
