2 Poetry Redo!!!! Requirements for poem: SOAPSTONE analysis:
Original work Form must match the subject Four poetic devices (imagery not included) Must present some image SOAPSTONE analysis: Explain each aspect of SOAPSTONE. Explain the effect of each aspect. Explain why you chose each aspect for the poem’s construction. Explain the overall effect the audience should receive from the poem. (This is written as an essay.)

3 SOAPSTONE SPEAKER OCCASION Consider a speaker for your poem Examples:
Your inner voice Your future self Your younger self Your alter ego Your doppelganger Some unknown person A family member An enemy A friend OCCASION Consider for a particular event of time the poem lives or relives A memory A critique A tribute An homage A farewell address A confrontation A declaration An elegy

4 SOAPSTONE AUDIENCE PURPOSE Who your intended audience?
Peers Parents Self Your crush Loved one Enemy Fear Etc. PURPOSE In what manner does the speaker convey the message? How does the speaker try to spark a reaction in the audience? How does the poem make the audience feel? What is the intended effect?

5 SOAPSTONE SUBJECT STYLISTIC and LINQUISTIC ELEMENTS
What is the poem about? How does the audience know this? Is the subject revealed immediately or delay the revelation of the subject? STYLISTIC and LINQUISTIC ELEMENTS Syntax Language Literary devices Imagery Diction Detail Figurative language AND what is the effect of these stylistic and linguistic elements?

6 SOAPSTONE TONE ORGANIZTION
What is the author’s attitude toward the subject? What emotional sense do you take from the piece? How does the diction point to the tone? ORGANIZTION How is the poem organized How does poet arrange the content? How is the rhythm and rhyme arranged? What form of poetry does the poet use? How does the physical structure of the poem relate its mental arrangement? Does the poem reveal the following: a list, analogy, climax, comparison/contrast, cause and effect, hierarchy, variation of a single theme, etc?

7 SOAPSTONE NARRATIVE EVIDENCE
How does the poet tell the “story” of the poem? What does the poet reveal? What does the poet conceal? What does the poet express in an opposite manner? What does the poet express openly? EVIDENCE What kind of diction dominates the poem? What is the source of the images? How do sound devices contribute to the poem?
