7 post impressionism “Post-Impressionists extended Impressionism while rejecting its limitations: they continued using vivid colours, thick application of paint, distinctive brushstrokes and real-life subject matter, but they were more inclined to emphasize geometric forms, to distort form for expressive effect, and to use unnatural or arbitrary colour.” from

8 Mental Illness The last few years of life mental problems afflicted him He cut off the lobe of his left ear and over 150 psychiatrists have been attempted to label his illness but did not succeed. Diagnoses have been put such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and syphilis He also was poisoned by swallowing paints that he used. The paint were lead based, which leads to lead poisoning and results in swelling of the retina

9 Death Van Gogh committed suicide.
His depression deepened, and on 27th July 1890, at the age of 37 he walked into the fields and shot himself in the chest. Without realizing that he was fatally wounded, he went back to the Ravoux Inn where he dies in his bed two days later

15 Quotes I often think that the night is more alive and more richly colored than the day. I put my heart and my soul into my work, and have lost my mind in the process. Happiness... it lies in the joy of achievement, in the thrill of creative effort. How can I be useful, of what service can I be? There is something inside me, what can it be? I am still far from being what I want to be, but with God's help I shall succeed.
