3 STEM Academy Why we exist: -Create a small, academic learning community -Promote students’ achievement by creating a collaborative environment in which all stakeholders together – parents, students, teachers, administration -Provide an enriching STEM educational experience through the problem-based learning model that is reputable and achieves results for kids -Ensure all our students are academically prepared for higher education -Develop students’ career readiness, to include communication skills

8 STEM Academy General Bell Schedule AM arrival – report to cafeteria or holding area: 6th grade – auditorium 7th grade – gym 8th grade - cafeteria 7:45 am Breakfast 8:10 am Dismiss to Class 8:20 am 1st Period Begins 3:25 pm Final Bell

9 8 th Grade Schedule 7:45 am Breakfast 8:10 am Dismiss to Class 8:20 am 1st Period Begins End of 1 st Period Bus #1 Leaves for Lee 2 nd Period Begins End of 2 nd Period Bus #2 Leaves for Lee Students return to Nimitz 3:25 pm Final Bell STEM Academy

10 Lunches & Lockers Lockers & Backpacks Store backpack in assigned locker 6 th & 7 th Grade lockers are at Nimitz Before/after school, during lunch 8 th Grade lockers are at Lee ALL middle school STEM students must turn lunch money in to the Nimitz cafeteria 6 th & 7 th Grade lunch procedures 8 th Grade lunch procedures

11 STEM Academy Extracurricular Activities Each student is to participate in at least one extra-curricular activity. There are many options: Band, Choir, Orchestra Academic UIL Science Fair CyberPatriots eCybermission Athletics Robotics Theater Art Clubs

12 STEM Academy Community Service Requirements STEM students are to complete annual community service hours, as follows: 6 th grade – 5 hours 7 th grade – 10 hours 8 th grade – 10 hours Faculty will organize a few service opportunities during the year for students to participate in collectively, while representing STEM Academy. 13 STEM Academy Early Dismissal Conferences Typically reserved for students who are struggling in an area of academia Initiated by the Teacher Provide a valid email Need to schedule a conference? Email the teacher directly Email the grade level team directly

14 STEM Academy How you can help… STEM Advisory Board – need one business representative for each category: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Participate in STEM Parent Meetings, generally two a semester Identify corporate/business sponsors and mentors to enrich our program Engineering Festival, Career Day, Field Day Active membership in Nimitz PTA Volunteer – field trip chaperone http://www.neisd.net/vol/index.html
