 Density Overview

Hours: 1 st and 2 nd  START HERE  Density “To Do List” – may not complete all of this today  Complete the Bell Ringer  Create procedure for lab  Create table for lab  Collect data  Create graph  Finish follow-up questions

Important Reminders – 1 st and 2 nd Hour  Mystery Chemicals Chart and Analysis should have been turned in  Online Blog Posting – Due Wednesday  Upcoming Vocabulary Quiz – Wednesday

Week of September 23rd  Bell Ringer: 9.23.13  Using the following measurements, calculate the density of the object. ObjectMass Unit: g Initial Volume Unit: mL Final Volume Unit: mL Actual Volume Final - Initial Unit: mL Density (Mass÷Volume) Unit: g/ml Gold Necklace 38.645.347.3 ???

Bell Ringer: Solution  First, find the volume of the the gold necklace  What do you need to do?  Final Volume – Initial Volume = Actual Volume  47.3 – 45.3 = 2 ml  Second, find the density  What information do you need?  Mass and Volume  Density = Mass / Volume  Density = 38.6 grams / 2 ml = 19.3 g / ml

Learning Targets  What are we learning?  I can determine the density of an object.  How will we know we were successful?  I created a procedure and developed a chart to organize my data for the density lab (Day 1).  I completed the analyzing and concluding questions for the density lab (Day 2).

Density Review  Ratio between mass and volume  How much stuff is in a given space

How do you find density?  http://www.youtube.com/w atch?v=VfMDC4guXZg http://www.youtube.com/w atch?v=VfMDC4guXZg

Density Lab Intro  How to…  Reading a Graduated Cylinder  Read the bottom of the curve  Record out one decimal  Example: 44.4 ml  Triple Beam Balance Review  Check unit – grams  Make sure the scale reads – 0 g

Density Lab  Prediction:  Predict what would happen when you determine the density of the objects you have. For example, If you think the density will be different. If you think it will be the same, explain why?  Examples:  The density of the 3 objects are going to be different because…  The density of the 3 objects are going to be the same because…

Density Lab  Supplies: Graduated Cylinder, 3 metal objects, Beaker, and Triple beam balance Procedure: 1. Write directions for finding Volume of an object. 2. Create chart to organize data 3. Get directions and chart initialed by me 4. Find Volume of each object ( record in chart) 5. Find Mass of each object (record in chart) 6. Calculate Density

Procedure How would you find the volume of the 3 objects? 1. Using the graduate cylinder, add water 2. Measure INITIAL volume and record 3. Add object carefully 4. Re-measure the volume and record 5. Calculate the volume of the object by: Final Volume – Initial Volume = Actual Volume of Object

Density Chart ObjectMass Unit: g Initial Volume Unit: mL Final Volume Unit: mL Actual Volume Final - Initial Unit: mL Density (Mass÷Volume) Unit: g/ml Wire (small) Tube (medium) 18 Pennies (Large)

Hours: 3 rd, 5 th,and 6th  START HERE  Today’s Tasks  Complete the Bell Ringer  Finish any measurements  Check with each class to see where they are at  Create graph  Finish follow-up questions

Important Reminders – 3 rd, 5 th and 6th  Recently Graded:  Mystery Chemicals Chart and Analysis should have been turned in  Bell Ringers – Week of September 9 th  Upcoming Vocabulary Quiz – Wednesday

Bell Ringer: 9.23.13  Using the following measurements, calculate the density of the object.

Analyzing the DATA…  Looking at the measurements, what were the 3 main variables of the three different size objects?  Mass  Volume  Density  Your goal is to create a graph showing how these changed.  You will have 3 different colored lines.

Analyzing the Data  Using Notability, open your lab notes so far.  Click the “Wrench” button on the upper right hand corner to change the type of paper.  Choose the graphing paper (smallest option) –  First one reading left to right

Analyzing your DATA: Setting up the graph Objects Mass, Volume, or Density (g) (mL) (g/ml) Small Medium Large (Wire) (Tube) (Pennies) Key: Mass Volume Density 60 40 20

Follow-Up Questions  Download the questions by going to my teacher webpage  Go to “Spring Lake Park” webpage  Search the site…  Type in: Streitz  Go to the “Guest Materials” Page  Click on the appropriate document  3 rd, 5 th and 6th  Density Handout - General Density Handout - General  1 st and 2 nd  Density Handout - Honors Density Handout - Honors

Done Early…  Practice calculating density with minerals  Go to: http://bit.ly/16kKXaBhttp://bit.ly/16kKXaB  Choose different minerals to test  Record mineral number  Include your measurements to figure out the density
