2 The Victorian Age Began in 1832. Began in 1832. Ended in 1901 with the death of Queen Victoria. Ended in 1901 with the death of Queen Victoria. Victorian Age: a period in British history during the reign of Queen Victoria in the 19 th century; her character and moral standards restored the prestige of the British monarchy but gave the era a prudish reputation. 3 Victorian Age: Economy Shift A shift from agriculture and land ownership to an economy based on trade and manufacturing. CAUSE: Two major changes in farming. 1. Applied scientific method to farming (i.e. crop rotation). 2. Invention of modern combine. EFFECTS: 1. One person could now do the work of five. 2. People migrated to London looking for work.

4 Victorian Age: Industrial Revolution CAUSE: England is the first country to harness steam power. EFFECT: 1. New inventions fast railways iron ships looms printing presses telegraph/ intercontinental cable

5 Victorian Age: Industrial Revolution CAUSE: England is the first country to harness steam power. EFFECT: 2. England becomes an industrial giant. No country before or since achieved the greatness England did at this time.

6 Victorian Age: Industrial Revolution CAUSE: England is the first country to harness steam power. EFFECT: 3. Ushers in labor as a new economic and political power. They form unions and obtain the right to vote. Establishes a definite upper, middle, and lower class.

7 Victorian Age: An Era of Contrasts Effects of Scientific Method on Religion: Effects of Scientific Method on Religion: –Darwin’s The Principles of Geology  According to religion, the earth was created around 5,000 B.C.  Darwin’s book claims it is much older.

9 Victorian Age: An Era of Contrasts Effects of Scientific Method on Religion: Effects of Scientific Method on Religion: –People become prudish, proper morally strict.  Royalty –Queen and her husband were models of middle-class domesticity.  Middle-class –Women were not permitted to lift skirt high enough to reveal ankles. –Tables were draped so ladies would not be offended by seeing legs. –Term “drumstick” created so a lady could ask for a leg of chicken.

10 Victorian Age: An Era of Contrasts Effects of Industrial Revolution on Women: Effects of Industrial Revolution on Women: –The number of women far outnumbered men.  Since many women could not marry, they were forced into factory jobs. –Traditional idea of the women’s sphere is challenged, which forces a new emphasis on home and family and a separation of men’s and women’s work in the middle class. –Grueling working conditions and unemployment drove thousands of women into prostitution.  Prostitution became increasingly organized.  Huge pornography market was developed.
