Walk 2 Learn is NOT …. Direct Instruction of new learning / new concepts “Leveled” instruction of the Core Content (Core Instruction is always delivered in the classroom, by the classroom teacher. This ensures Universal Access for all students.)

What is Walk 2 Learn? A 30 minute block of instruction when ALL students receive differentiation based on skill need. It a time designed to Maximize Resources, by identifying small groups of students who have similar instructional needs.

Where Do We Start? Walk 2 Learn instructional blocks (30 minutes) need to be scheduled when you have the most resources available to that grade level. The “titles and categories” of those who will be providing small group instruction are not necessarily considered. Think about WHO you have available to provide instruction.

Sessions are calendared around …. “Natural” benchmark reporting periods (so the most current assessment data is available); Grade level planning and early release dates... *(grade level planning so the grade level has time to look at the data and make the groups) *early release day so the classroom teachers have time to plan for their own groups.

Students are Grouped by Skill Need “It is perfectly appropriate, even advisable, to group those students who do not understand a concept or skill and to find time to reteach the concept or skill in a different way and to provide additional practice.” Reading / Language Arts Framework for California Public Schools, p. 230. It is also appropriate and advisable to group students who have mastered the standards to provide the needed acceleration.

How are Students Grouped Based on Teacher Observation, Input, and Assessment Data Groups are made by the classroom teachers, who know their students best! The Intervention Coordinator may assist with the interpretation of the data.

Analyzing the Data …. The grade level meets during a scheduled Grade Level Planning Meeting to look at the most current assessment data and determine the standards of focus for the next session.

Students are grouped across the grade level. Group size varies, based on the number of students who have each skill need. The number of groups at the grade level may vary, depending on the # of resources available during that half hour block. How are Students Grouped cont’
