2 Welcome to SHRM! Welcome to your leadership position in our chapter and SHRM! This presentation is designed to guide you in your new role as a volunteer leader. It will give you an overview of the Society for Human Resource Management, its organization, mission, and services as well as our chapter. Your work as a volunteer leader will help SHRM realize its goals as a professional society devoted to the interests of those who manage the human assets of the world's businesses, agencies, and organizations. 3 About SHRM The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) is the world’s largest association devoted to human resource management. Founded in 1948, SHRM currently has more than 575 affiliated professional chapters within the United States and members in more than 140 countries. 10 SHRM Board of Directors SHRM’s Board of Directors is made up of SHRM’s CEO and: –Chair –Chair Designate –Immediate Past Chair –Secretary –Treasurer –Directors At-Large New Board Orientation

11 SHRM Membership Advisory Council The MAC serves as an interface between the volunteer leaders and the SHRM Board of Directors. The MAC is composed of one elected representative from each of the Regional Councils. The MAC provides input from the membership through the regional councils to the board and feedback from the board to the membership, back through the regional councils; and provides operational input to SHRM to ensure optimum service/support to and from the volunteer leadership. 12 SHRM Panels The panels are made up of SHRM members – senior HR professionals who deal with issues that impact the HR profession on a daily basis. Through membership on one of the panels, members identify emerging trends in specific topic areas, provide expert advice on matters of professional significance, and provide guidance on matters of public policy. 14 Regional Councils Each of the 5 regions has a council composed of the state council directors Regional Councils provide opportunities for best practice sharing among and between the council members. In addition, regional councils : –Provide channels of communication on human resource management issues. –Encourage connections with business leaders and the general business community to advance the profession. –Play a key role in identifying and communicating emerging strategic issues. –Provide input to the SHRM Board of Directors. –Facilitate the achievement of SHRM's strategic objectives by providing state councils and chapters with guidance and assistance. 15 SHRM State Councils Each state and designated territory within the United States is governed by a state council, headed by a state council director who is automatically a member of one of the seven regional councils. State councils provide a structure for key volunteer leaders in the state to consult together on the affairs, activities, needs, and problems of the Society in the state (or territory) and to adopt programs to promote the progress and welfare of the Society as a whole, including providing channels of communication between chapters, state councils, and regional councils; services to members of the human resource management profession within the state, and leadership training at the state level. 16 SHRM Affiliated Chapters Membership in an SHRM local chapter is separate and apart from membership in the national SHRM organization. There are over 575 affiliated chapters. The minimum requirement for chapters to remain affiliated with SHRM: 10 SHRM members or 30% SHRM members (whichever is greater). Affiliation requirements for chapters affiliating after 1/1/04 are 25 SHRM members or 51% of total membership is SHRM members (whichever is greater). Affiliation requirements for chapters affiliating after 1/1/12 are 25 SHRM members and 51% of total membership is SHRM members. Effective 1/1/17, all non-100% chapters regardless of affiliation date will be required to meet the affiliation requirements of 25 SHRM members and 51% of total members is SHRM members. 17 Role of Regional Teams Assisting individual members with questions about membership Assisting chapters in remaining affiliated and with chapter operations Attending state council and regional council meetings as a resource Participating in state conferences as an exhibitor Acting as a speaker at chapter meetings, conferences, and events as available Promoting SHRM member benefits Assisting in the recruitment and retention of members Assisting potential chapters in becoming affiliated New Board Orientation

18 SHRM Affiliated Chapters Chapters are arranged in five size categories: –Small (100 members or less) –Medium (101-300) –Large (301-500) –Mega (501-1000) –Super Mega (1000+) New Board Orientation

20 President’s Responsibilities Manages affairs of chapter - subject to direction of Board Approves all committee chairs Serves as ex-officio member of all committees Presides at all meetings Attends all State Council meetings as representative of chapter New Board Orientation

21 President-Elect’s Responsibilities Plans membership meeting programs and pre-meeting workshops Performs duties of President in his/her absence Assists the organization with special projects and events Maintains close communication with officers and committee chairs Compiles SHAPE Information and Interfaces with all Board Directors as needed New Board Orientation

22 Secretary’s Responsibilities Records minutes at all meetings and handles Chapter correspondence Maintains a file of all Chapter business: –meeting minutes –chapter newsletters –handouts at meetings –correspondence –supply of stationery and envelopes New Board Orientation

23 Treasurer’s Responsibilities Receives and disperses funds in a timely manner Keeps financial records and documentation Checks P.O. box and distributes mail Sends dues notices and other invoices Reports financial status to Board at every Board meeting Files information with IRS Walks on water New Board Orientation

24 Past-President’s Responsibilities Advises the President and other officers and Board members regarding: –past practices –general operations –other matters to assist in smooth operation New Board Orientation

25 Expectations for Directors Planning  Participate in setting goals and carrying out specific plans for your area (organizational goals)  Develop area objectives for the year (maintenance goals) Budgeting  Develop budget for area by date provided by Treasurer  Operate responsibly within budget New Board Orientation

26 Expectations for Directors Monthly Board Meetings  Presence at monthly meeting or written report of progress submitted in a timely manner in advance of meeting  Participation in discussions New Board Orientation

27 Expectations for Directors Management of chairs  Set direction and goals  Communicate updates on Board meeting content  Remind chairs of Board meetings and obtain reports prior to Board meetings  Provide support and resources as needed  Address concerns immediately  Recruit and fill chair positions, as needed  Arrange for your successor and provide training New Board Orientation

30 Chapter Bylaws Sample available online in the Volunteer Leaders’ Resource Center A copy of our chapter bylaws is available Chapter bylaws should be reviewed periodically – Our bylaws were last reviewed on any number of occaions with no resolve. Any revisions need to be sent to SHRM through our District Director and then our Field Services Director for review prior to presenting them to the chapter for a vote Any bylaws changes must be pre-approved by SHRM (including name changes) New Board Orientation
