Teaching Pronunciation Pronunciation is probably the most neglected aspect of English language teaching. Most teachers often lack confidence to teach it methodically. There are some differences in pronunciation between the students ’ mother tongue and English. Children are generally good at imitating and will pick up your model of pronunciation more easily than adults. Pronunciation teaching forms an integral part of your presentation of new words and sentence patterns. The need to provide a good model of pronunciation in these early stages is therefore of great importance.

When Phonics Meets K.K.  Phonetic Symbols  Phonics: multiple mapping (_____________)  K. K. phonetic symbols: one to one mapping (_______________)

Introduction Phonics is a method of teaching reading skills by connecting speech/ phonological patterns to spelling/ orthographic patterns.

What phonics is  Sound-spelling correspondence  Pronunciation-spelling correspondence  Print-sound relationship

Why teach phonics “ Give a man a fish, and he eats once. Teach a man to fish, and he eats forever. ” Teaching phonics provides a valuable skill that they can use for a life time. If students learn how the letters combine to represent the sounds, they will be able to pronounce unfamiliar words and receive the tools for becoming independent readers.  Reading/ Speaking  Listening/ Writing  Vocabulary/ Spelling  Pronunciation

10 Basic Phonics Rules  A, E, I, O, U, sometimes Y and W are the vowels.
