 How do Sociologists name and describe different types of groups? SIMPLE TO COMPLEX: THE LARGER THE GROUP THE GREATER THE STRUCTURE NEEDED FOR IT TO FUNCTION EFFECTIVELY - RULES, PROCESSES, DEFINED ROLES, MISSION STATEMENTS, ACCOUNTABILITY ETC.

Diad - 2 People ie. Marriage, friendship Primary groups: members have close personal relationships, emotional connection ie Family Secondary Groups: members relate in a more formal, less personal way  Roles, structure and rules  ie. Sports Teams, clubs, etc.

Formal Organizations:  Structured Groups that have rules stating who can join the group, who plays what role, and how rules are made and enforced.  These groups can be voluntary or compulsory  Most have a similar hierarchical structure, which is based on levels of power  Made up of both paid and volunteer workers

Bureaucracy: Often formed in order to meet more complex goals  Rigid Operational Style: Things are always done a particular way  Clearly Defined Management Structure: You must “climb the corporate ladder”.  Impersonal – usually no contact with management or input into decisions

Utilitarian bureaucracy – operate as a business, make a profit for owners Normative Bureaucracy –based on helping others or improving society Coercive bureaucracy – Force clients into them (ie. Prison) Can you think of an example for each?:
