3 You’ve been on this Road Trip for awhile now and you’ve probably started to notice that there are many multi-word verbs that use the word PULL. This lesson goes over several verb forms that use the word PULL. Hopefully by the end, you’ll have this verb ready for some serious Road Work. So sit back, buckle up And LETS BEGIN!!!

4 English multi-word verbs or phrasal verbs come in many different shapes and sizes. Typically, they're made like this: Sometimes its easy to guess the new meaning BUT many times it’s impossible!! VERB + Preposition = A multi-word verb that now has a new meaning

5 PULL Verb + Definitions WORDDEFINITION Pull AheadTo overtake, move into the lead or in front Pull AwayTo gain in distance, to leave from a place Pull InTo arrive at a location (like a station or destination) Pull OutTo leave from a location, withdraw Pull OverTo stop a car by the side of the road Pull UpDraw up and stop a car

6 PULL Examples: WORDDEFINITION Pull AheadTo overtake, move into the lead or in front The racer pulled ahead in the last lap even though he was behind most of the race. Pull AwayTo gain in distance, to leave from a place The race leader pulled away from the others and won the race handily. The truck pulled away form the loading dock after unloading.

7 WORDDEFINITION Pull InTo arrive at a location (like a station or destination) The train pulled in right on time. The man pulled into the parking lot and called his friend on the phone. Pull OutTo leave from a location, withdraw When the boat pulled out to sea, he realized he would never return. The car pulled out into the fast lane and nearly got hit.

8 WORDDEFINITION Pull OverTo stop a car by the side of the road We pulled over to check our tires as something was making a funny sound on the car. I pulled over onto the shoulder of the road to get a candy bar from my bag. Pull UpDraw up and stop a car The car pulled up to the curb and stopped in front of the door. She pulled up to the drive through window and ordered a burger. Ready for some practice!!
