2 What are Blood-Borne Pathogens?
Infectious agents that cause disease Specifically, these agents are found in an infected persons’ blood Can be transmitted via cuts, other breaks in the skin or any circumstance in which there is blood to blood contact Some of the agents are: Hepatitis B virus Hepatitis C virus Herpes virus Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)

Where Found How Transmitted Common cold virus Mononucleosis Cytomegalovirus (CMV) Nasal passages Saliva Oral entry from contaminated hands Sharing of food, drinks, toothbrushes and kissing Salmonella Shigella (Dysentery) Rotavirus Hepatitis A virus Feces Urine

4 Employees at risk for occupational exposure to infected body fluids:
School Nurses Custodians Child Nutrition Program (CNP) Employees Security Officers Coaches Bus Drivers Classroom Aides Clerical Staff Administrators Teachers

5 Standard Precautions WORK PRACTICE CONTROLS
Prevent or Minimize Risk of Exposure to Potentially Infected Body Fluids Wearing GLOVES (latex or vinyl) Effective HAND WASHING before eating, after toileting and immediately after removing gloves Immediate reporting of all EXPOSURE INCIDENTS involving students and/or employees Report to building Principal and School Nurse Appropriate report forms to be completed Parent of involved student(s) to be notified immediately A copy of the EXPOSURE CONTROL PLAN is on file with your building supervisor and/or the School Nurse.

6 The following items are available from the School Nurse:
Standard Precautions Engineering Controls The following items are available from the School Nurse: Puncture-proof, disposable sharps container Breathing barrier if performing CPR with rescue breathing Building Supervisor and Plant Manager should provide and maintain the following engineering controls: Disposable plastic liners for all waste receptacles Hand washing facilities with soap, running water and paper towel dispenser or electric hand dryer Antiseptic hand cleaner (minimum of 60% alcohol) where soap and water are not available Appropriate disinfectants to clean surfaces, waste receptacles that are contaminated by potentially infected body fluids

7 Proper Medical Waste Procedures
Standard Precautions Proper Medical Waste Procedures “Double Bag” all materials contaminated with potentially infected body fluid(s) Place materials into a plastic bag, tie off and drop into a second plastic bag, which also then tied off. Remove double bagged material to large outside waste receptacle as soon as possible. Filled sharps containers are sealed and transported by Lead Nurse for collection in secured receptacle. This receptacle is picked up monthly by contracted licensed medical waste removal company. Soiled student clothing is to be double bagged/secured for pick up by student’s parent-NOT sent home on bus. Items not picked up within 24 hours will be discarded.

8 Vaccination as a Prevention
Preventive vaccines available for Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B. PEEHIP provides coverage for these vaccines if administered prior to an exposure incident. Employees with PEEHIP should contact their private physician to inquire about the completion of these vaccine series, and the single-dose Tdap vaccine.

10 Mandatory Employee Training
All new employees must complete initial training All new employees must complete and submit a completed Bloodborne Pathogen Quiz and Hepatitis B Vaccination Consent or Declination Statement form. These are then to be submitted to the School Nurse assigned to the employee’s work site. All employees participate in annual review of work practice controls and procedures to minimize transmission of communicable disease/illness in the school setting.
