5 5 Configuring Internet Explorer 7 The next 13 slides will take you step-by-step through the configuration process. The next 13 slides will take you step-by-step through the configuration process. To begin, log-on to your PC and double-click on the Internet Explorer icon on your desktop; or click on Start, then the Internet Explorer icon (upper left). 6 6 Step 1: Please choose your default search provider If you choose “Keep my current default search provider”, Live Search will be your search provider. Do not click on any “Save settings” choices yet. Scroll down to the next question. If you choose “Let me select from a list of other search providers”, a message will appear that says “Click ‘Save Settings’ below to see the list of search providers”. DON’T click “Save settings” …until you get to the BOTTOM of the page. Scroll down to the next question. TOC WARNING! If you see the “Save Settings” choices circled in red, DO NOT click on them! Choose either choice, but don’t click on Save Settings yet.

7 7 Step 2: Help make your browsing more secure by setting up Phishing Filter Use your cursor to place a check in the checkbox to turn on the automatic Phishing Filter. Later on in this presentation, you will be given more information about the Phishing Filter. TOC

8 8 Step 3: See web pages more clearly If the “Always use ClearType to view web pages” is not already checked, use your cursor to place a check in the box. TOC

9 9 Step 4: Help customize web pages to your current location If the “Use the current settings: English (United States)” radio button is not already selected, then use your cursor to select it. TOC

13 13 Step 7A: Choose “Go to your home page” If you chose “Keep my current default search provider” in Step 1, this dialog box will appear. Choose the third choice, “Go to your home page”, by clicking on the link. TOC

15 15 Congratulations! You have successfully configured Internet Explorer 7 and your default home page appears. Skip slides 17-18 and go to the remaining slides to become more familiar with Internet Explorer 7. TOC

16 16 Step 7B: Choose your default search provider If you chose “Let me select from a list of other search providers” in Step 1, you will see this screen. Under “See Global Search Guides”, click on the search provider that you would like to be your default provider – such as Google. TOC

17 17 Step 7B: Add your choice as your default search provider The “Add Search Provider” dialog box will appear automatically. Use your cursor to check “Make this my default search provider”. Then click the “Add Provider” button. TOC

20 20 To Use the Help Feature While you are becoming familiar with Internet Explorer 7, you are encouraged to use the Help feature. It’s easy to use and understand – so do use it as your first recourse! To display the Help feature, hit the “F1” key on your keyboard. TOC

Click on the tab you want to close – click on the “X” that appears on the right-hand side of the tab (Note: You must have more than one tab open) 2. 29 29 Using Quick Tabs Quick Tabs Button Internet Explorer displays up to 10 tabs on the screen. To display all your tabs – whether you can see all of them or not – click on the Quick Tabs button. All open web pages will be displayed as thumbnails. Click on the page you want to view. Internet Explorer displays up to 10 tabs on the screen. 31 31 Using the Information Bar The only time the Information Bar will pop into view is when you visit a site that prompts Internet Explorer to display information about security, downloads, blocked pop- up windows, etc. You will see the Bar displayed at the top of the web page. 32 32 The Phishing Filter You may get a message asking if you would like to turn the Phishing Filter (pronounced like “fishing”) on or off – you should say you would like to turn it on. The Phishing Filter is a new feature in Internet Explorer that helps detect phishing websites. 33 33 The Phishing Filter If the site you visit is on a list of reported phishing websites, Internet Explorer will display a warning web page and a notification on the Address bar. From the warning web page, you can continue or close the page. If the site contains characteristics common to a phishing website but isn’t listed, Internet Explorer will only notify you in the Address bar that it might possibly be a phishing website. 34 34 Using the Zoom Tool The Zoom Tool enables you to enlarge or reduce the view of a web page – not just font, but everything on the page. 35 35 Using The Favorites Center Clicking on the Star icon will open the Favorites Center. You’ll be able to open folders you’ve created and visit your favorite sites. Clicking on the Star/Plus Sign icon will allow you to add a favorite or organize your favorites. 38 38 Using the Links Bar The Links Bar is displayed at the top of the Internet Explorer window and is used as a convenient place to store links to web pages you visit very often. The advantage of the Links Bar is that it is much quicker than going into your Favorites folders! Links Bar TOC

39 39 Using the Links Bar To add a web page to the Links Bar: 1. If the Links Bar is not already displayed, turn on the Links Bar by clicking the Tools button (upper right corner), then click Toolbars, then select Links If you still can’t see the Links Bar, it’s probably locked on the right side of the screen. To unlock it, click the Tools button, then click Toolbars, then click “Lock the Toolbars” to clear the check mark. Drag the Links toolbar down so you can see it. 2. Navigate to the web page you want to add and do one of the following: Drag the icon or the URL for the page from the Address bar to the Links Bar Drag a link from the web page to the Links Bar 3. To view a web page in your Links Bar, just click on the link 4. You can organize your links by dragging them to different locations on the Links Bar 5.
