Missouri’s Resources

Natural Resources Every time you step outside, you are surrounded by natural resources. A natural resource is something in the environment that people use. Missouri’s natural resources include water, trees, soil, and minerals. Natural resources can be divided into two types: water resources and land resources.

Saving Resources Natural resources are either renewable or nonrenewable. Renewable resources can be replaced. Some of Missouri’s most important renewable resources are trees and livestock.

Saving Resources Nonrenewable resources can run out. Minerals are an example of nonrenewable resources. A mineral is a natural material found in the ground or water. Galena is the state mineral for Missouri.

Resources Help the Economy
People rely on Missouri’s natural resources to make the state’s economy strong. An economy is the way a place uses its resources to produce goods and services. It is also the way buyers and sellers exchange goods and services. It is important the our natural resources do not run out. Conserving resources helps Missouri’s economy.

Water Resources Many businesses need water resources. People and animals must have water to drink. Barges use rivers to transport goods to other places. Missouri’s waters also provide income through tourism.

Land Resources In addition to water resources, people need resources from the land. For example, a fishing boat manufacturer needs wood from trees. It also needs aluminum and steel. Aluminum is the most abundant metal near Earth’s surface. Lead also comes from minerals found deep in the ground. Missouri has been a major lead producer for many years.
