3 HISTORY The education system in the United States has seen many changes over the past 250 years. COLONIAL EDUCATION (1607-1775) EARLY NATIONAL EDUCATION (1775-1820) 19 th CENTURY EDUCATION 20 th CENTURY EDUCATION Yale University

4 KINDERGARTEN System of the kindergarten was developed in the 19 th century by Frederich Froebl, a German reforemer and educator. Margarethe Schurz founded the first kindergarten in Watertown, Wisconsin, in 1856 Approach traditionally based around playing, singing, drawing and social interaction as part of the transition from home to school At the age of 5 years

5 ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Around age six, U.S. children begin primary school, which is most commonly called “elementary school”. They attend five or six years and then go onto secondary.

6 SECONDARY SCHOOL MIDDLE SCHOOL JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL or Secondary school consists of two programs: the first is “middle school” or “junior high school” and the second program is “high school” HIGH SCHOOL 2 programs

7 GRADING SYSTEM Academic Transcript - Academic Transcripts are part of the application for admission to university or college Grading System - Grades - Grade point average (GPA)

8 HIGHER EDUCATION A very unique characteristics of the American higher education system is that you can change your major multiple times if you choose. FIRST LEVEL: Undergraduate – Bachelor´s Degree SECOND LEVEL: Graduate - Master’s Degree THIRD LEVEL: Doctorate Degree - Community/Junior College (2 years, then transfer) - 4 year University - typically take 1 to 2 years to complete - it takes 3 years or more (Master’s D. sometimes not necessary) - might be 5 or 6 years for international students
