4 Why study a language? English is not enough……. Some ideas from university and year 12/13 students: It’s fun you find out about other people and cultures knowing a language makes you more employable they lead you into other subjects you make new friends you learn about yourself and your own country it gives you more confidence great for holidays! gives you communication skills…

5 Languages are needed for the social side of business: Listening is a skill Cultural awareness pays off Relationships make a difference Networking is easier in the local language According to top employers: Business is global today English is important but not enough You need to get noticed overseas Foreign languages are vital Employability: Give yourself the edge

6 Languages currently available at Keele: French - levels 1-10 German – levels 1-10 Spanish - levels 1-10 Russian – levels 1-6 Japanese – levels 1-6 Mandarin Chinese 1-6 Arabic –levels 1-2 Italian – levels 1-2

7 Keele language levels: Each level corresponds to a one-semester module Entry depends on previous language knowledge, e.g. Level 1 – absolute beginner Level 5 – GCSE Level 7 - A-level

8 Keele language modules: carry a full 15-credit rating at Keele. can be chosen as ‘free-standing electives’ by most students, counting towards your overall workload and degree. can be taken instead of an elective in a student’s principal subject(s). can be taken as free additional module by students who do not have electives choices can be studied for one semester or systematically over all three years.

12 In 2013/14 there were ca. 850 students enrolled on 50 language modules at Keele. And this is what previous students have said about language learning……..
