5 Scientific Support to Policies lThese activities cover diverse subject matters but they will be implemented in order to : èensure co-ordination across various topics èensure complementarity with the thematic priorities

6 Objectives lSupport the formulation and implementation of Community policies, bearing on the interests of the existing Member States as well as Candidate countries. lSupport to Community policies as an integrated activity: èTargeted precisely on needs (demand-driven) èIntegrated across policy areas (e.g: environment & health, agriculture-forestry- sustainability) èSensitive to changes in policy requirements as they occur

17 Instruments lSpecific Support Actions (conferences, workshops, expert groups, studies) l Co-ordination Actions l Specific Targeted Research Projects This Priority is open to “traditional instruments”

18 Implementation lBudget : 340 M€ from which 265 M€ are presently allocated èWell-specified WP, complemented by a detailed task description document in the guide for proposers èOne call per year èPossibility of “emergency” calls (e.g.. on SARS) lWork programme:

19 Scientific Support to Policies lFirst call for proposals published on December 17, 2002 with a deadline March 13, 2003 lSecond call for proposals expected in October 2003 with a deadline 3 months later

20 What do we hope to achieve ? lEffective implementation of the European Research Area by encouraging a specific “playing field” for research to support all EU policies lSystemic improvement in the relationships between research and policy at all levels in the EU lA more coherent research base, reflecting the increasing integration of policies and the science that underpins them lTimely and effective scientific inputs to Community policies, with improved uptake of results at national and EU levels
