2 What ? Principles and Practice of computer networks in depth Focus on Internet! Prerequisite: CSSE 340 Not officially enforced prerequisite: CSSE 460 –If you have not taken it, better to rethink of taking this class! Very toughhhhhhhh!

3 What ? Main topics –Web caching –Internet search: Google, Yahoo, AskJeeves, MS Live… –Peer-to-peer (P2P) Networks Gnutella, BitTorrent, Freenet, Chord –Wireless & Mobile Networks –……

4 Why ? CSSE 460 only introduces basic concepts, lack of breadth and depth Internet applications are increasingly pervasive –Needs to know their principles and practice –P2P traffics take a large portion of current Internet traffic volumes BitTorrent, Skype, Kazza, Gnutella –Different devices are connected for pervasive computing Servers, PCs, Laptops, Cell Phones, iPod, Camera, … Wireless and Ad hoc networks CS graduates are supposed to know more?

5 Course Format No textbook required Research paper reading and presentation Instructor’s lectures + student’s paper representation + open discussion Homework –Paper review + Presentation + Projects All materials are online available – http://fac-staff.seattleu.edu/zhuy

6 Paper Review Each student MUST submit the review for each paper before the class –The presenter does NOT need to do it though –See instructions online –Copy & paste is plagiarism, resulting in failure of this course Each student must print and bring the paper hard copy into the class Late submission of paper reviews will NOT be read and graded.

7 Class Attendance Class attendance is MUST One class miss leads to one scale down of your final grade –You have at most three classes to miss if you want to pass the course: A  B  C  D –Unfortunately, there is NO guarantee of grade A for everybody If you cannot ensure attendance, better drop it NOW!

8 Class Participation A big chunk of your final grade Including but not limited to –Asking a question –Raising a point –Presenting an argument –Offering an alternative point of view If you are quiet, you need to make some noise in this class!

9 Presentation At least one presentation per student Presenter –>= 20 slides –Email the slides to me at least ONE hour before the class! –30 minutes presentation –20 minutes leading discussions Tips on making a good presentation are online Basic requirements online! You need to follow! A big chunk of your performance!!

10 Projects Mainly networking projects Mostly individual projects May have group projects –Group competition –Presentation –Project reports

11 Grade Components projects (20%) research presentation (25%) paper reviews (15%) class participation (15%) exams (25%) DO NOT MISS any class!

12 How is this class expected? Not presumably easy But would be fun and will touch on many hot topics Strengthen your network programming skills Improve presentation skills ……
