1 Vocabulary #1 1.Numeric Keypad-Makes it easier to enter numbers into the computer. 2.Enter (Return) Key-Starts a new paragraph. 3.Arrow keys-Used to move the cursor up, down, right, or left on the screen. 4.Space Bar-Used to insert a blank space. 5.Escape-Used to quit a task you are performing.

2 1.CTRL and ALT keys-(Control and Alternate)- used with another key to make the computer do a specific task. 2.Shift Key-used to type uppercase letters. 3.Caps lock keys-used to type in all uppercase letters. 4.Tab key-moves the cursor to the next stopping point. 5.Delete (Backspace) key-used to remove one or more characters. 3 Vocabulary #3 1.Hardware-The physical components of the computer system. 2.Software-The programs or instructions that tell the computer what to do. 3.CPU-The brain of the computer or central processing unit. 4.ROM-The permanent memory that is built in your computer. This is read only. 5.RAM-The computer's working memory, sometimes called random-accessed memory.

4 VOCABULARY #4 1.Megabyte-Approximately a million bytes. 2.Gigabyte-Approximately a billion bytes (or 1,000 megabytes). 3.Input Device- The hardware that is used to pass information into the computer. 4.Output Device- The hardware that receives and displays information coming from the computer. 5.Modem-The device that allows your computer to talk to other computers over a telephone line.

5 VOCABULARY #5 1.Monitor-A video or computer display device. 2.Laser Printer- A printer that uses both laser and photographic technology to produce high quality output. 3.Printer- The hardware that provides printed output from the computer. 4.Hard Copy- A printed copy of computer output. 5.Compact Disc- A disc on which a laser has digitally recorded information such as audio, video, or computer data.

6 VOCABULARY #6 Hard Disk -A fixed, large-capacity magnetic storage medium for computer data. Floppy Disk -A portable magnetic storage medium for computer data that allows users to randomly access information. Graphical User Interface- The use of graphical symbols instead of text commands to control common computer functions such as copying programs and disks. Icon- A small picture or symbol representing a computer hardware function or component. Ink-jet Printer -A type of printer that forms letters on the page by shooting tiny electrically charged droplets of ink.

7 Vocabulary #7 1.Menu Bar--The line at the top of the screen that gives you different choices 2.Title Bar--The line near the top of the screen that gives the name of your file 3.Clip Art--picture files that can be pasted into a document 4.Graphics--pictures that can be inserted into a document 5.Toolbox--a collection of drawing and painting tools

8 Vocabulary #8 1.File--a word processing document 2.Font--a design style for a complete set of letters, numbers and symbols 3.Retrieve--to load a previously saved file from a diskette or hard drive 4.Copy and Paste--to highlight text, leave it where it is, and also put a copy of it in another location 5.Cut and Paste--to highlight text and move it to another location
