Purpose  To challenge you.  To give some insight into current thinking about ICT …. mine and other peoples …so that thoughts are perspectives  To discuss ideas about using ICT as tool in whole class teaching and to indicate examples of current classroom practice.

Alan November …break in

What is it we are about?  For the first time ever we now know how to store almost all of the world’s most important information and make it available instantly, in almost any form, to almost anyone on the Earth

And yet ….  We have school systems around the World wasting billions trying to graft the tools of the 21 st century onto an educational model designed to serve the needs of a 19 th century industrial society.  We need to take a good look at what it is we want to do and how technology can help.

So you think that there is a shared view ….  On what we are doing …..  There needs to be a revolution …….

A Learning Revolution  There is no doubt about it … the best time to develop the learning abilities of children is before they start school….. the brain’s major routes are laid out in those early years  50% of a child’s ability to learn is developed in the first four years of life  This makes parents the world’s most important educators

How?  We need to create the environment to make it happen  Physical …  Mental …the mindset  Our new interconnected globalised society requires a similar model of schooling ….  An adaptable model to meet the changes of pace

What does it mean to me?  We each have a different learning style as individual as our fingerprints  Schools that teach effectively recognise this and utilise the freedom the ideas generate

We are now at a really historical turning point …. AAAAnd the choices are ….. Carry on Change

Roy Evans

If it is change …  How will you handle it?  What will you do?  What do you need to know?  What is your vision?

I don’t want to discuss ‘carry on’ …

Or dgn as 1 ey.

A pause to gather strength and to keep focused ….. What is it that we are about?

Little things …big things  Hardware  Software  Structures and systems  Getting sucked in

Issues  Leadership,vision and management  Taught or caught (in passing)  Teaching and learning  Suites by any other name  Pupil access in their world to their world  Inclusion

And the thinking is …..  Skills, competencies or techniques ?  Tool or subject ?  The agents of change  Assessment  Managed services  Software consumer determined  Impact on pedagogy – NOF – Ofsted  Impact2

Taken for Granted  Teachers WILL have the tools that they need

Comment  The conservative use of ICT has not generated enough change in outcomes to initiate expenditure of energy by a great number of teachers.  Change by …….

ICT as a tool  The essence of effective teaching is that teachers should know when, when not, and how to use ICT to meet their teaching objectives… and the needs of those being taught

3 Key Issues

Issue 1 the teacher has a clear view of how ICT will enhance the quality of pupils' learning in the subject; the teacher has a clear view of how ICT will enhance the quality of pupils' learning in the subject;

Issue 2 Software and hardware is selected to ensure that the principle tasks for the pupils are related to the subject content and not to the operation or understanding of the software; Software and hardware is selected to ensure that the principle tasks for the pupils are related to the subject content and not to the operation or understanding of the software;

Issue 3 teachers make productive use of whatever ICT resource is available and appropriate to the lesson and the learning whether, for example it is a computer suite, a robotic toy or a large screen computer display teachers make productive use of whatever ICT resource is available and appropriate to the lesson and the learning whether, for example it is a computer suite, a robotic toy or a large screen computer display

ICT as a subject  Expectations of achievement are increasing, especially with the youngest children, and greater rigour is expected at higher key stages.  Greater emphasis is now being placed on: productive, creative and discriminating use of ICT by pupils, productive, creative and discriminating use of ICT by pupils, on them gaining a deeper understanding of the nature of information and its many forms and on them gaining a deeper understanding of the nature of information and its many forms and on promoting initiative and independence. on promoting initiative and independence.

The impact of ICT on the school as whole  The use of ICT by teachers and pupils may have an impact on the standards achieved and the quality of teaching and learning in all subjects.

Whole Class Teaching  Teachers should know how to use ICT to enhance teaching and learning  They need access to a large ‘chooser chart’  Small steps …..big ideas  Match the pedagogy and then move

……..and at last …. you might say …into the classroom Transforming the way we learn A vision of the future of ICT in schools If we are there already …. What next ?

What will they look like?  It is fairly clear that in the short and medium term they will continue and play a vital role in ensuring that learning is available to all  Equally important they will continue to provide opportunities for social interaction  Estelle Morris …BETT 2002 http://www.dfes.gov.uk/speeches/09_01_0 2/

Are you still focused? …we are nearly there …  Have you got a vision?  What will you do about this? ….tomorrow…next week …next year ……
