PSYCHOLOGY …AND MEDICINE Zsolt B. Major - 4081237@t-email.hu 6th lecture

INTER ALIA… How to deal with drug and insurance agents? What are the possible options for resistant patients to win their co-operation (compliance)?

Conformism: Solomon Asch At least once 74% of the participants adapted, followed the clearly wrong answer But if they had even just 1 „partner”, it „helped” them significantly to stand by their view! Social psychology Other social impacts

Social psychology Persuasion Marginal vs. Central way, arguements Research: article signed by prof of university vs. noname student Primary vs. Freshness effect stump speech’s efficiency’s phenomenon: When the decision’s date is close in time to the speech, the arguements heard at the end of it have greater impact on decision, then ones heard at the begeinning – and so on the opposit…

Social psychology Persuasion Protection, getting immunity: Anticipatory warning „Self-preparing”, „cognitive- inoculation”: practicing the resistance in convincing situations - eg. by „self- confuting” Definiteness = using indicative linguistic formulas (ignore „?”, „!”) Convincing „tricks”: „baiting” – first ask just a really small service… Eg. In advertismenets: Celebrity’s voice Voice of every day people Humor, joke Emotional effects

PERSUASION – Practical benefits: Manage (become defended) the medicament agent’s visits (recognize the mechanism of persuasion: first just small gifts/services, voice of famous prof.); check eg. the referred researches’s results… (Eg. Saying a clear, indicative ”no”, in a calm voice to them…) Patients usally will remember the informations (commands) heard at the beginning of the consultation – particularly if he got bad news too: his cognition will narrow to the bad news, and won’t neither hear the followings… Use of emotional convincing – eg. in case of campaign aginst smoking, you can say to women, and men also: „Don’t stop smoking for your own sake, but think about your (future) baby…!” In case of resistant patient: first ask just a small changement in his behavior (eg. Just 10 minute walk every day for an overweighted patient…)

Attraction depends on: Phisical attraction Closeness Feeling of familiarity Similarity Love: Rather similars But we need some autonomy too See Longitudinal researces Personal examples? What is love exactly?? Definition closest to the perfect: (almost) like the freindship with our best freinds… = we accept each other’s stupidity…, but just almost, because in love there are more deep and different kind of emotions… (the „Purple Mist” at the beginning of a love is about our projected desires…) BRIDGET JONES: „love you - as you are…!” See self-knowledge, (self)acceptance…! Social psychlogy Interpersonal attraction

Socialpsychlogy Interpersonal attraction Opposits attract eac other…?? ? WRONG THEORIES…: „He/She will change for me…” When „us” is borning, the „Ego” („I”) will die…

Ego/I WE/ US

Ego/I WE/ US Ego/I WE/US = Ego/I & Out and away: I can only be together with sy else (with my partner), take care of him/her if I can take care of me too, if I learn to accept myself, and deal with myself too…!!!

INTERPERSONAL ATTRACTION – practical benefits: For our pesonal happyness (find love…) let’s find & join company of people whith similar interest… Avoidance the „Halo Effect”: in case of a beuatiful girl /handsome guy check the fundamental attributional error… (examine the internal and external factors…) Win the trust of an adolescences patient – for example before an operation talk with him/her about love, in case if he/she is in love, has love affairs, heartache…

Questions and answers… E-mail: 4081237@t-email.hu
