1 TC2-Computer Literacy Mr. Sencer February 19, 2010

2  Everyday the computer is used for a large number of applications worldwide.  There are five different types of users:  Home User  Small Office/Home Office User  Mobile User  Power User  Enterprise User

3  Each group is to use the internet to research.  One written summary will be collected from each group.  ALL NAMES MUST BE WRITTEN  One grade will be given for the group.  20 Minutes to Complete Assignment

4  Typically has one or more desktop computers  Computers are sometimes part of small networks to share the internet and a printer (wired and wirelessly)  Typically uses a computer for P.I.M., Web access, communications and entertainment.  Using the internet home users:  Conduct research  Pay bills  Shop  Play Games  Access multimedia

5  Software found is generally  Productivity software – (word processing, spreadsheets) ▪ e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint  Personal Finance – (accounting, budgeting) ▪ e.g. Quicken, Microsoft Money, TurboTax  Utility software – (anti-virus, firewall) ▪ e.g. AVG, Norton  Entertainment Software – (games, multimedia players) ▪ e.g. Windows Media, VLC player  Educational Software – (software to aid in learning, research) ▪ e.g. Rosetta Stone, Reading Zone, Encyclopedia Britannica

6  Typically companies with less than 50 employees or self-employed individuals  Lawyers, Accountants, Travel Agencies, Contractors  Typical devices found are desktop computers and smart phones  Computers are networked to save money on hardware and software  Typically use a computer for Information management, Internet access, and managing their resources effectively.

7  The internet is used for business purposes  Information look up (addresses, directions)  Send/Receive e-mail messages  E-Commerce – conduct business on the Internet, this is where they advertise and sell their products  SOHO Software:  basic business software such as word processing and spread sheet programs ▪ Used for document preparation and maintaining finances  Industry specific software to their business ▪ Accountant - Tax software ▪ Travel Agency – Reservation software

8  Work while on the go, in atypical environments  Outside of office, schools  Typical Mobile Users  Sales Representatives, Students, Journalists, Real Estate Agents, Insurance Agents, Meter Readers  Devices used by the mobile user are notebook computers, Tablet PC, smart phones, and other mobile devices  Typically use that device for connecting to other computers on their network, the Internet, email, mobile entertainment

9  Mobile users often transfer information between their devices and other computers on the same network or through the Internet so they can work  Mobile User Software:  basic business software ▪ word processing and spread sheet programs  presentation software ▪ create and deliver presentations to large audiences  entertainment software ▪ Watch movies, play music and games

10  User that requires the capabilities of a powerful desktop computer (workstation)  Businesses usually have at least one power user, but can also be found in Home settings  Typical power users are engineers, scientists, architects, and graphic artists  Typically work with multimedia, graphics, audio and video  These applications require extremely fast processors due to the nature of the work of a Power User

11  A power users computer is called a workstation, is usually networked and has internet access  Software found is usually industry-specific software  Engineers and Architects - use software for drafting and designing floor plans, assemblies, vehicles – AutoCAD  Graphic Designer – for creating sophisticated drawings – Photoshop, Illustrator

12  Enterprise ( a large company)  Usually has hundreds to thousands of users that work or do business with offices across a region, country or the world  Enterprise User  Each employee or customer that users a computer in the enterprise  Enterprise computing  huge network of computers that meets the diverse needs of an Enterprise  The network facilitates communications among users across all locations.  Users access the network of servers or mainframes through desktop computers, mobile computers, and mobile devices.

13  Enterprises use computers and the computer network to process high volumes of transactions in a single day, generally for basic business activities.  billing millions of customers  prepare payroll for thousands of employees  manage thousands of items in inventory.

14  Enterprise users work with word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software.  The marketing department in an enterprise uses desktop publishing software to prepare marketing literature.  The accounting department uses software for accounts receivable, accounts payable, billing, general ledger, and payroll activities.  Enterprises typically have Web sites to showcase products, services, and other company information as well as for e-commerce, allowing them to conduct business online.  Some enterprises even use blogs to communicate among employees, and customers.

15  Generally found in an Enterprise  Telecommuting  when employees work away from a company’s standard workplace and communicate with the office through the computer/Internet.  Employees who telecommute have flexible work schedules so that they can combine work and personal responsibilities, such as child care.

16  Pull out a sheet of paper and answer the following question  Describe the type of user you are and why.
