1 Introduction to Fredrick Herzberg Born in 1923 American psychologist Founder of the ‘2 Factor Theory’

2 About Herzberg Theory produced in the 1950’s Theories concerned with job satisfaction Herzberg’s theories closely links the ideas of job satisfaction and motivation.

3 The theory He concluded that two sets of factors are important: 1. Hygiene factors – these include reasonable pay, satisfactory conditions of work, benefits packages – without these, people are dissatisfied, but they alone do not create job satisfaction; 2. Motivators – these include responsibility, challenge, self-improvement – these provide job satisfaction.

4 Motivating factors Herzberg pointed to motivating factors which relate to the content of jobs. These were called ‘satisfiers’ and are factors which can increase the motivation to work better and harder. They are: 1.Recognition of effort and performance 2.The nature of the job itself – does it provide the employee with an appropriate degree of challenge? 3.Sense of achievement amount of appropriate responsibility 4.Opportunity for promotion

5 Nine dissatisfiers 1.Autocratic or arbitrary company policy and administration 2.Low pay 3.Poor working conditions 4.Antagonistic relationships between different levels in the hierarchy 5.Unfriendly relationships between different levels in hierarchy 6. Unfair management and supervisory practices 7. Unfair treatment of employees 8. Feelings of inadequacy 9. Impossibility of growth and development
