5 How are we funded? Private sector funding (Co-ordinator role) Grant funding – where appropriate on a project basis Future funding opportunities being considered in order to be sustainable

6 What do we do? We work to raise awareness of waste issues and recycling opportunities and also encourage co- operation between partners on waste communications. Newsletter Website Hosting events Networking

7 How? We work throughout the North East of England – With residents – With businesses – With Community Recycling Network North East – With local authorities – With waste organisations

8 Local scene Within the North East we produce a total of 8.6 million tonnes of waste per year (2009): – 4.8 mt construction and demolition – 1.4 mt municipal solid waste – 2.2 mt commercial and industrial waste – 0.2 mt agricultural and other waste – Source: NESRB Waste is no longer a waste - but a valuable resource

9 Previous Campaigns Schools Against Waste – Facilitated by funding from NE REIP – WANE launched the project to partners – WANE worked in partnership with Ben Grant to develop SAW website www.schoolsagainstwaste.co.uk

10 Baseline survey – NE HH waste tonnages Facilitated by WANE using waste data flow figures

11 Current campaigns Recycling Rewards – Working with Valpak to consider development of a project aligning requirements of retailers and local authorities to increase recycling of packaging material.

12 Current campaigns Waste Directory – Developing a “one stop” resource for the North East of England. – Collating disparate information into a user-friendly format and signposting further information. Will only be as good as data contained within it – appeal for information! – Considering best way to launch. – Will be looking for sponsorship.

13 What do we need now? We need you! The tough economic climate is squeezing resources Waste Aware North East are able to support public, private and community sectors. If you are interested in waste/resource management talk to us.
