Warm Up: What were the three steps Erasmus proposed taking to reform the church in the early 1500s? Why? LT: I can tell the story of the Luther. DOK: 1; S. 3 Geog/World History February 18, 2015

Classwork: Take two column notes, notice the highlighted words and questions for the left- hand side of the paper☺ Got Salvation? Daily Life on the Eve of the Reformation: -fast, pilgrimage, indulgences, mass, collect relics Why did the church1. Corruption: Popes: Political concerns need change?*example: Julius II: led wars ~should a Pope be leading a war? Job is spiritual not military!

LT: I can tell the story of the Luther. DOK: 1; S. 3 2. MONEY: church officials used the office to advance career and money 3. Parish Priests were clueless when asked questions! Modern Devotion: rejected DOGMA of church, just follow Christ’s teachings

TURNING POINT IN HISTORY 10/31/1517 ● Martin Luther: monk/professor at University of Wittenburg ● He questioned the certainty of salvation Catholics: Faith+works=salvation Luther: HU mans never do enough good…not saved by works but by FAITH! God is merciful and grace cannot be earned, justified by faith!

Reflection- Q. on the left, answer on the right ● Do you agree with Luther or the Catholic Church’s ideas about salvation? Why?

Some vocabulary to keep it real ● Justification ● Grace ● Mercy ● the act whereby humankind is made free from guilt or penalty of sin. ● Getting what ISN’T deserved ● NOT getting what IS deserved

Rebel? Nah, just upset! ● Chief teaching of the Protestant Reformation ● Saved by grace, #1 study the Bible as the source of truth ● Nailed 95 Theses to the door at Wittenburg: attacked the abuses in the sale of indulgences

Luther is angry about Tetzel ● TETZEL “As soon as the coin in the coffer rings, the soul from Purgatory springs”

Breaking news coverage ● Pope Leo, What do you think about what’s going on in Wittenburg? What are you going to do about this Luther guy? ● He’s just a “drunken German! He will amend his ways when he sobers up!”

“It’s not you, it’s me…no wait, it IS YOU!” ●☺●☺ ●German princes break up with the Pope! ●And another thing I don’t like about you… Sacraments! You are destroying the real meaning of the gospel. We will keep the baptism and Eucharist, and we will let our clergy marry!

● Now you have done it! Diet for Luther! ● Just want to say it again: Faith alone justifies nad brings savation, not good works ● Diet=Court! ● At WORMS

● Charles V: Edict of Worms: you have got to be wrong ML, you are banished and indeed should be executed! ● Frederick –hide! Meanwhile, churches become supervised by the govt.

WWF 1524 ● How did Luther’s theory of salvation differ from the Catholic theory? ● Peasants vs Lords: state and rulers called by God to maintain peace for gospel; now the Protestant movement is dependent on the state (i.e. nations) ● (YOUR AUTHENTIC ANSWER!)

Politics in German Reformation religious unity would be nice” ●Charles V HRE (aka Charles I Espana) is a Hapsburg politically ●FR and Pope Clement VII are allies; Charles has been fighting for >20years ●Now the Ottomans, oh bother ●HRE ☺ Luther, Charles gets there too late to put them in check

Peace of Augsburg: accept division of Christianity ● How did peace influence political/religious development of Germany? ● German states can choose with equal legal rights ● Did not recognize religious tolerance for the individual but the right of each German ruler to determine religion of subjects

EXIT: Now write a summary of your notes using the words Reformation and Martin Luther at least once. LT: I can tell the story of the Luther. DOK: 1; S. 3
