DoD Architecture Registry System DARS 16 September 2009 Walt Okon Senior Architect Engineer Senior Architect Engineer for Information Sharing Enterprise Architecture and Standards Directorate DoD Chief Information Officer (703) 607- 0502. walt.okon@osd.mil

Outline  DARS Objectives  Architecture Federation Strategy  AV-1 Registration and Federation capability update  User interface update  DARS Training

DARS Objectives  Registry for Architectures  Catalog & link reference architectures and data  Federate the DoD EA via component registration  Visualize and navigate the federated DoD EA  Support Authoritative Data Source identification, taxonomy creation, extension and management  Assess DoDAF and Reference Model conformance  Assess the use of standard reference taxonomies The Authoritative Source for DoD’s Enterprise Architecture

DoD NCDS Policy  Data is an essential enabler of network-centric warfare (NCW) and shall be made visible, accessible, and understandable to any potential user in the Department of Defense as early as possible in the life cycle to support mission objectives. [DoDD 8320.2]  Data assets shall be made visible by creating and associating metadata (“tagging”), including discovery metadata, for each asset… All metadata shall be discoverable, searchable, and retrievable using DoD-wide capabilities. [DoDD 8320.2]  Discovery metadata shall conform to the Department of Defense Discovery Metadata Specification (DDMS). [DoDD 8320.2] Bottom Line: Architecture data must be discoverable

Architecture Content Discovery Requirements:  Find architectures of relevance for decision making and reuse  Determine purpose, scope, source and authority  Determine alignment with Joint Capability Areas, FEA Lines of Business, and other reference models Issue:  Architectures are developed and maintained in repositories distributed across DoD. AV-1 registration is key to implementing NCDS for architectures

Discovery Approach 1.Tag architectures with content discovery metadata Map metadata to DDMS - Source: AV-1 –Title  (Architecture Name) –Creator (Author)  (Architect) –Publisher  (Project Sponsor) –Subject  (Scope: Mission/Capability Area) –Dates  (Completed, Approved, Timeframe Start/End) 2.Register metadata in an Enterprise Catalog  DARS OR… Implement federated search web services 3.Deliver metadata on demand via federated search services

AV-1 Registration Service Update 1.New AV-1 Microsoft Word document template completed –Incorporates new AV-1 registration metadata –Download from DARS –Fill in AV-1 data –Upload completed template to DARS 2.New AV-1 Registration Web Services –Supports new AV-1 registration metadata –Download sample client from DARS –Modify to operate in host environment

New AV-1 Template 1.Download the Microsoft Word AV-1 template from DARS

AV-1 Template (cont.) 2. Fill in AV-1 data

AV-1 Template (cont.) 3. Upload completed document to DARS.

AV-1 Registration Client  Download C# code from DARS  Modify to use in host environment  Register client with DARS

New AV-1 Client New metadata for AV-1 registration –Context –Organizations –Communities of Interest (COIs) –Products –Related Architectures –Tools –Methodologies –JCA Name –Time Frame Name –Geographical Area Name –Security Caveats

Metadata Registration Service Federation Repository Register Provider View Provider Update Provider Register Metadata Search Holdings Repository/Tool Environment SOAP DDMS + Metadata (XML) Federation Client AV-1 metadata captured and extracted by repository/tool environment Federation Client Services Menu DARS Federated Catalog DARS Federation Web Services

DARS Sept 2009 Release  Redesigned User Interface –Portal Look and Feel (like iGoogle) –Compact (Do Everything From Right Here Interface) –Customizable (Save Documents, Architectures, etc to “My DARS”) –Easy to use (drag and drop documents, architectures, etc)

DARS Sept 2009 Release (cont.)  Taxonomy Builder –Ability to create COI taxonomies –Ability to delegate authority to extend taxonomies  Ability to use the JCAs, FEA LOBs and other user- defined reference taxonomies to federate documents and architectures

DARS Training  Training resources currently available –DARS concepts overview PPT on DARS –DARS tutorials available on DARS home page –DARS SOP –On-line help –User Group meetings [Next meeting Aug 14]  DoDD 8320.02-G provides NDCS concepts implemented by DARS  DoD 8210-G “Architecture Federation Guidelines”  Sept 30 release will include new UI with enhanced help access
