The Science of Life Biology Bio—Greek word-Bios meaning life Logy—Greek word-logos meaning study What characteristics have you observed that are shared by all living things? List: How does biology relate directly to your own life? List some examples of living things.

The Characteristics of Life Made of one or more cells- the Cell Theory Displays levels of organization-cells, tissue Grows and develops Reproduces Responds to stimuli Requires energy Maintains homeostasis-a balance Adaptations evolve over time

The Nature of Science Science is a process based on inquiry that seeks to develop an explanation. Theory-meaning/ define Science vs. Pseudo-science- such as, astronomy/ astrology List the branches: Cell biology, Genetics, Evolution, Animal behavior, and Ecology

Methods of Science List the steps of the Scientific Method: observe, research, form a hypothesis, experiment, collect data, analyze data-form a conclusion How is a scientific investigation done? Using the headings Collect Data, Analyze the Data, and Report Conclusion—write a paragraph about each of these processes..

Measurement-SI units There is a need for common units Length: millimeter, centimeter, meter, kilo Mass: milligram, gram, kilogram Volume: milliliter, liter and Area: L x W Density: Mass/ Volume Weight: Newton Temperature: Celsius or Kelvin Time: seconds

Experiment Question: Would cans of diet coke and coke weight the same and will each float? Research: read? Form a Hypothesis: Experiment: Collect data Analyze data and form a conclusion- repeat the hypothesis then answer the question
