2 Symbols Symbols are everything  Graphics Tend to represent points such as bridges and houses,  Linear Tend to represent roads, railways, rivers Color  Area Represented by color – forested land, crown land

3 Standards and Specifications for Polychrome Maps  National Topographic System maps utilize these rules  A specific set of rules that guides the use of symbols and colors  Specifically, ensure that on 1:50000 and 1:250000, that the land features depicted are uniform Caution:  Some things change with time, not all maps change at once. Newer editions of 1:50000 and 1:250000 maps use symbols that look different from older maps
