1 M ONAGHAN I NTEGRATED D EVELOPMENT Supporting Growth and Opportunity M ONAGHAN I NTEGRATED D EVELOPMENT Supporting Growth and Opportunity Introduction to MID: MID is the Local Development Company (LDC) for Co Monaghan and delivers national programmes at Co level Funding from the state and EU Two core Programmes: LCDP (Local & Community Development Programme) - tackles poverty and social exclusion through partnership and constructive engagement between Government and its agencies and people in disadvantaged communities. LEADER -- to improve the quality of life of rural dwellers and to diversify the rural economy Additional programmes and initiatives developed & delivered locally to complement national progs & respond to local needs

2 Local and Community Development Programme (LCDP) – providing employment, training and further education opportunities LEADER Programme - to improve the quality of life and to diversify the rural economy Local Employment Service (LES) – matching people to jobs opportunities across Co Monaghan Volunteer Centre – promoting volunteering, matching potential volunteers to community needs TUS Programme – providing community work placement Rural Social Scheme – providing community work placement Job Club – A training course to enhance employability prospects Ability Activation Project – helping employers embrace varied ability in work Peace III Integration Project – supporting integration of new communities IFI Older Persons Project – helping older members of the community gain the benefits of peace Equality for Women Measure – personal development & second chance opportunities for women Helping Hands project – odd jobs service for vulnerable older persons and individuals Local Initiatives delivered by MID:

4 Purpose of Today's event: Raise awareness of current national supports available to employers Update you on what supports are available to employers locally from MID Highlight for discussion the key LM policy areas i.e. Youth Unemployment

5 M ONAGHAN I NTEGRATED D EVELOPMENT Supporting Growth and Opportunity M ONAGHAN I NTEGRATED D EVELOPMENT Supporting Growth and Opportunity High level Policy Issues Nationally unemployment rates predicted to stay above 13% into 2014 and a need to target long-term unemployment Underemployment in rural areas is 22.7% or 135,700 (Pobal) Rapid fall in off-farm employment in farm households of 30.5% in a year, half of which is attributed to fall in construction sector which fell from a peak of 284,000 in ‘07 to just under 100,000 in ‘12 (FAS) Youth unemployment has tripled since ’07 from 9% to 30%; Ireland has one of the highest levels of young people not in education, employment or training in the EU (NEET) @ 21% (DSP) 90% of all enterprises in IR employ < 10 people, highlighting the importance of micro enterprise supports in rural areas GDP in the BMW region at 96.6% of EU avg compared with 151.1% for S&E with unemployment 2.5% higher in BMW region (2012)

6 C OMMUNITY L ED L OCAL D EVELOPMENT Delivered by 50 Local Development – Local Action Groups Job Placement & Self Employment Stimulating Rural Enterprise Community Dev Volunteering Active Citizenship Supporting Access to Education Training & Lifelong Learning Community Led Local Development Supporting Youth & Older People through Social Enterprise Integrated Local Development Strategy Matching unemployed with local employers and job opportunitiesStimulate creation of Rural Enterprises & farm diversification Keeping unemployed close to labour market through relevant skills development, work experience and personal development Addressing under-employment and seasonality through support for off farm employment opportunities Enterprise start-up support and training for unemployedWork experience opportunities in private/community sectors Proactively supporting Social Economy to provide important social services, and public goods Supporting equality of access to Education, Training and Lifelong learning opportunities Promoting Active Citizenship & Linking Volunteers with local community & voluntary groups Stimulating cultural/artisan food and place-based Tourism Building local ‘social capital’ through developmental supports to groups & individuals Supporting Community & voluntary groups access community employment opportunities

7 MID Results for 2012 Total Individuals Supported by MID Activities:3,227 Individuals supported into Education & Training:1,758 Individuals placed in Jobs: 585 Enterprises Supported: 224 Groups/Communities Supported: 91 Com Groups & Social Economy work placements: 76 Individuals supported in Volunteering activity: 312 Total of projects funded under LEADER 2012 €639,674 Total projects approved under LEADER 2012 €1,502,368 Levered almost 2⅔ times its core funding into County
