e.g. “Report on UK Retail Industry in 2011” “Report on Investment Proposal: New Products” “Report on Staff Lateness” “Report on the Proposed Merger with Unibank”

7 2. TERMS OF REFERENCE (Introduction)
The background: why you are writing it, who asked for the report, when should it be submitted by: “The purpose / aim/objective of this report is to….” “This report aims to…” “This report presents / gives information on….” “XY has requested this report….” “The report was commissioned by….” “The report was to be submitted by…”

8 3. PROCEDURE – How? Steps taken to collect data (sources): “Information was collected from different sources…” (annual reports, materials on the Internet, telephone calls, visits made…) “Extensive research was conducted among…” “We surveyed a total of…..employees…”

9 4. FINDINGS – What? Information / facts discovered as the
result of research into something: “The key findings are outlined below:” “It was found that….” “The following points summarize our key findings….” “According to the majority of respondents…”. “55% of those surveyed said….”

10 5. CONCLUSION – So what? Summary of the main points: “In conclusion…”
“It is clear that….” “It was decided / agreed that….” “The research shows / demonstrates that….” “From the research we conclude….”

11 6. RECOMMENDATIONS Suggested solutions based on conclusions:
“It is recommended / suggested that….” “We strongly recommend that…” “It is essential to…” “The best solution is….”
