1 Avenet eFolio The current and future eFolio systems from Avenet

2 Quick History, part 1 eFolio: Past & Present  Owners add voluntary content to a personalized web site, via a powerful web-based content management tool  “Wizards”/“Datatypes” assist students, workers and educators supply pertinent content goal-orient section templates, such as “Work Activities” and “References”  Additional “web site” features such as online forms, surveys, news & events, etc. allowing owners to create truly interactive sites.  28,000+ active eFolios

3 Quick History, part 2 Proof-of-concept: eFolio Supplemental Tools  New applications developed in Q1 2004 Features:  Simple, step-by-step creation process, culminating in a fully-populated eFolio  Collection of sample “skills” questionnaires; when completed, a report for each questionnaire was presented on the matching eFolio  Centralized searching for “skills assessment” answers  Leveraged current development technologies (Microsoft.NET) Leads to…

4 Quick History, part 3 Board of Teaching Online Forms:  Jointly developed by Avenet and MN BOT, 2003-2004  Initial scope: Electronic delivery of “Waiver” and “N.L.C.E.” forms for online completion, with “report views” for Board review. So where is it?

5 Part 3, Cont. – B.O.T. Online Forms Real-world use required three additional “big-ticket” features: 1.“Proxy” completion of forms: Teachers/Experts don’t complete their own waivers;District Representatives do… 2.Workflow requirements after submission: “Readiness” and “Board” reviews 3.Group submissions: District Reps must be able to submit a group of waivers/forms as one “packet”

6 So, What’s Next? Avenet and Board of Teaching working together Avenet building “next versions” of eFolio  Future features reflect market directions, customer requirements, and lessons learned from previous tools (B.O.T. Online Forms and DEED prototype)

7 eFolio Upgrades, Phase 1 (in progress) Five project goals 1.Interview-style creation of MnSCU-hosted eFolios 2.Repository of questionnaires, provided via a web-based “Questionnaire Builder” (accessible to MnSCU and Avenet staff) 3.Centralized searching of eFolio content 4.Support for IMS specifications (www.imsproject.org) 5.“LinkBuilder” elements on questionnaires 6.And more...

8 1. Interview-style creation of eFolio “Like TurboTax”  Using “TurboTax.com” as a model, Avenet is creating a step-driven, simplified process for owners to create their eFolios “Interview Paths”  MnSCU and Avenet staff will be able to create additional “interview paths”, with specific prompts and/or content for groups of users (for launch, Avenet and MnSCU will create three paths: Student, Worker and Educator)

9 2. Questionnaires Repositories  Phase 1 of this project will allow virtually endless numbers of online “questionnaires”: surveys and forms built using finite, unambiguous questions & answers (numeric responses, true/false, multiple choice, etc) Builder  MnSCU and Avenet staff will use a web-based “Questionnaire Builder” to build and deliver questionnaires

10 2. Questionnaires: Paraprofessional Sample

11 3. Centralized searching  Avenet and MnSCU will be authorized to create “Third Party” clients, who can visit an online search portal  Searches may target fixed responses to questionnaires, as well as the entire collection of “free form” responses from owner’s eFolio sites  Each owner may “opt-in” or “opt-out” of these third party client searches  Third Party clients might included employers, workforce centers, etc.

12 4. Support for IMS specifications  For launch, eFolio owners may create an IMS “compliant” Learner Information Packet (L.I.P.): an XML-based file containing their portfolio’s content  L.I.P.’s can theoretically be transported between various electronic portfolio solutions  Avenet will continue to work closely with MnSCU and their partners to refine and validate the L.I.P.’s content and functionality

13 5. “LinkBuilder” elements on questionnaires  To encourage owners in using both free-form eFolio content and fixed Questionnaire responses, Avenet will provide a “LinkBuilder” element  LinkBuilders can be added to any questionnaire, providing a pull-down menu of the owner’s eFolio content (sections and items)

14 6. More… Recommendations on archiving an eFolio site to CD-ROM Continued.NET development Improved support for MacOSX Improved support for alternative browsers

15 Dataflow Diagrams for Phase 1 Three new* dataflows for an “owner”  An “owner” is an individual, such as a student or worker, who’s goal is to create and manage an electronic portfolio for themselves. 1. New “Basic” eFolio Owner 2. Returning “Basic” Owner 3. “Advanced”/ Legacy eFolio Owner * Currently, all owners start at the “Sign-Up Site”(www.efoliomn.com); this service will continue to supportwww.efoliomn.com existing customers and special requirements. After sign-up, these owners follow the third dataflow for “Legacy” efolio owners.

16 New “Basic” eFolio Owner

17 Returning “Basic” Owner

18 “Advanced” / Legacy eFolio Owner

19 Avenet QMS & eFolio: Phase 2 (proposed) 1.Tighter integration of “basic” and “advanced” content management tools 2.IMS “Views” management 3.“Design Center” for QMS system 4.Visitor-supplied feedback on eFolio content (Blogging)

20 Avenet eFolio: Phase 3 (proposed) 1.Fully integrated “eFolio 2” 2.Porting Project: migrate legacy eFolio’s to new system  Tools  Resources  Education  Documentation 3. New components  “Manual” approval workflows & proxy-submissions  Import IMS L.I.P. content  IMS competency evaluations & rubrics  PDF-snapshot for individual pages and/or complete site
