Has Moira experienced counterurbansiation? Go to the pizza

3. Data analysis and interpretation This section of your project has three main sections: 3.1 Changes in the morphology of Moira 3.2 The origins of the residents of Moira 3.3 The characteristics of the residents of Moira

3. Data analysis and interpretation This section of your project has three main sections: 3.1 Changes in the morphology of Moira 3.2 The origins of the residents of Moira 3.3 The characteristics of the residents of Moira For each of these, you will be required to: Present the relevant data using a suitable technique

3. Data analysis and interpretation This section of your project has three main sections: 3.1 Changes in the morphology of Moira 3.2 The origins of the residents of Moira 3.3 The characteristics of the residents of Moira For each of these, you will be required to: Present the relevant data using a suitable technique Analyse the data – this will involve a clear description of what the data shows or what patterns are evident in the data. Therefore the key word to bear in mind here is WHAT: what do the data show; what trends are apparent here?

Data analysis and interpretation This section of your project has three main sections: 3.1 Changes in the morphology of Moira 3.2 The origins of the residents of Moira 3.3 The characteristics of the residents of Moira For each of these, you will be required to: Present the relevant data using a suitable technique Analyse the data – this will involve a clear description of what the data shows or what patterns are evident in the data. Therefore the key word to bear in mind here is WHAT: what do the data show; what trends are apparent here? Interpret your findings – in this section your task is to explain why the patterns you have identified above are evidence for counterurbanisation. This is where you argue that the evidence does indeed support this position. Therefore, the key phrase to keep in mind in this section is SO WHAT? So Moira has grown rapidly in size since 1960? So what? How is this evidence for counterurbanisation?

Make sure you use your handouts on the background theory of counterurbanisation, as well as the notes you took on your environmental survey to help you in your explanations. Also, explanations must also include specific facts about Moira as well as reference to background theory. For example, when discussing the theory of increased personal mobility since the 1960s, what specific facts about Moira would make the village so suitable for people who now owned cars for the first time?

The Counterurbanisation Pizza©! In giving explanations, be careful of the following: Use the theory that is appropriate to the aspect you have just described. Be careful not to repeat the same theory over and over again for each sub-section. In light of the above advice, we now present the Lurgan College Geography Department’s very own Counterurbanisation Pizza©! This is one of those special order pizzas where you can have slightly different ingredients on different slices. There are four slices in total, one for each of your objectives. Click for the pizza to appear!

The Counterurbanisation Pizza©! Click on the appropriate slice to take you immediately to the relevant guidance notes. You can come back here at any time by clicking on the small pizza at the bottom of the screen. 1. Changes in morphology 4. Differences in SEGs 3. Differences in age structure 2. Origins of residents

3.1 Changes in the morphology of Moira What? Moira has increased in size considerably since the 1960s (there was little change between 1916-68) So what? This corresponds with period of inc. personal mobility (more people owning their own cars). This meant that people could respond to push & pull factors – mention the communications network that meant that Moira was a particularly good location for these newly mobile people) This will take you to some photos which you can use for your coursework

3.2 The origins of the residents What? Most people moved from greater Belfast (remember to quote figures) Note also rural depopulation from the West, but make sure your discussion of movements from Greater Belfast is longer!) So what? This is evidence b/c… relate the above back to the definition of c’urbn (ie movement of people from where?) discuss the PUSH factors – why leave Belfast? discuss SOME PULL factors, but keep them more general (eg quaint village); avoid refs to families and bigger houses – you will need these for later (include some photos & make sure you make reference to some points from your environmental survey here)

3.3 Differences in age groups in old & new areas What? New areas = mostly families with children Old areas = no one group stands out Quote figures! So what? This is evidence b/c… Discuss PULL factors, especially those that relate to children; why would parents think that Moira is a good place to bring up young children? (Again, remember photos and evidence from your environmental survey)

3.4 Differences in SEGs in old & new areas What? New areas = mostly higher SEGs Old areas = wider spread; mostly lower SEGs Quote figures!! So what? This is evidence b/c… Only those of higher SEGs can afford the COST of: Housing refer to photos and your environmental survey go online (eg www.robertwilson.co.uk ; compare house prices for similar sized houses in Moira and in Lurgan – we would expect Moira to be a bit more expensive)www.robertwilson.co.uk Commuting – cost of buying and running cars – use photos of cars from Moira, the M1 and some material from your environmental survey to help you here

Photos of Moira The next slides contain some pictures you may find useful for your coursework. Preview them now and escape from the ppt show to copy and paste any you want to use. Of course, if you have some of your own, feel free to use those instead!

1. Why is Moira suitable for counterurbanisation?

2. Commuting from Moira

3. The origins of the residents

4. Age structure – why children?
