1 High Level Forum of Climate-Smart Agriculture Stakeholders in West Africa, Bamako (Mali), June , 2015 Farms of the Future : An innovative approach to improve the adaptive capacity of communities Mathieu Ouédraogo Robert Zougmoré CCAFS West Africa Program, ICRISAT Bamako, Mali

2 Outline The Farm of the Future (FoFT) concept
The FoFT implementation process Experiences from West Africa

3 Farms of the Future concept
…. to connect farmers to their possible climate futures via farm visits which would enable them to build a mental picture of what their climate and farming systems might look like in the future…. Climate Analogues : finding future climates for potential adaptation 70% of expected future climates already exist somewhere else, Facilitates exchange of knowledge, technology, and practices between analogue sites. The 2030 climate of a maize-growing area near Durban will correspond to the current climate of a major maize-growing area in Argentina. Growers in Durban can learn from these analogous climates how to adapt as their climate shifts. The Farms of the Future (FOTF) approach is an interactive climate adaptation, knowledge sharing and learning experience that transforms climate forecasts into field-based realities by physically taking participants on a journey to areas that already experience climatic conditions that represent plausible future climate scenarios. The hypothesis behind this is that the knowledge exchange process can enhance a farmer’s/village’s capacity to adapt to changing climatic conditions by exposing them to innovative farming communities that have already successfully adapted their agricultural practices to various distinct climatic conditions the reference village might experience.

4 Involvement of stakeholders
Farms of the Future implementation process Involvement of stakeholders Post exchange visit Feedback at home through video sharing in community Developing / revising the village action plan to implement learning opportunities Capturing the process throughout for the scaling up perspective Farmers-to-Farmers exchange visit Pre-exchange visit activities Exchange visit process Video recording by farmers of the visit to document learning insights Identification of analogue sites Identification of learning opportunities Preplanning   Identification of the reference site Training / sensitizing agricultural innovation system workers (extension services) Modelling village change & defining the vision of the future of the village Main elements : i) Village modelling, ii) climate modelling , iii) farmer exchanges, iv) Post-exchange activities

5 Preplanning Identification of the reference site
Training / sensitizing agricultural innovation system workers (extension services) Past situation Modelling village change & defining the vision of the future of the village Using participatory modelling tool for exploring past histories, current situation and potential scenarios : vision of the future. Potential scenarios (Vision) Current situation Women and men construct a model of how their village (i) was in the past, (ii) move on to show the present situation and finish by (iii) building and discussing a range of future scenarios, Using participatory modelling tool for exploring past histories, current situation and potential scenarios, (Resource and infrastructure map, land use,….. ) and build the vision of the future of the community

6 Analogue sites identification
Climate modelling using the analogue tool The climate analogue tool identifies the range of places whose current climates correspond to the future of a chosen locality Identification of learning opportunities (technologies, practices, organisational system)

7 FOTF exchange visit Pre-exchange visit activities (selection of participants, training, logistics, etc.) Exchange visit process (visit of innovations, debriefing, etc.) Video recording by farmers of the visit to document learning insights

8 Post exchange activities
Feedback at home through video sharing in community I’m very glad that I’m one of the participant. In fact, we’re joking in Ghana. See how Burkinabe are fighting the negative impact of climate change. Growing trees using the technique by Mr Aziz with OM production using crop residue and household waste is what I’ll start first. Really, the tour is useful to me. Many thanks to Burkinabe farmers!!! I ask us too of Yamba village we should conserve our environment by planting trees. “I was very happy with this trip and I have learnt a lot… Developing / revising the village action plan to implement learning opportunities Country team writes up reports and journal article, and sharing of edited videos as appropriate Capturing the process throughout for the scaling up perspective

9 Experiences from West Africa
CCAFS and partnership with NARS in Burkina Faso Ghana Mali Niger Senegal

The "Farms of the Future" approach built on farmer- to-farmer exchanges to analogue sites : A novel way to improve adaptive capacity of communities and support knowledge transfer. Thanks for your attention
