PROPERTIES OF REAL NUMBERS Section 1.4

Objective  TSWBAT:  Identify properties of real numbers.  Simplify expressions.

Commutative Property  Order does not matter  Addition a + b = b + a  Multiplication

Associative Property  Changing the grouping does not matter.  Addition (a + b) + c = a + (b + c)  Multiplication

Identity  The operation that keeps the first number equal to the answer.  Addition a + 0 = a  Multiplication

Zero Property of Multiplication  Anything times 0 equals 0. 

Multiplication Property of -1  If you multiply by -1 the sign will change. 

Example 1  Which property is illustrated by each statement? A. Answer: Zero Property of Multiplication B. Answer: Associative Property of Addition C. Answer: Identity Property of Addition

Example 2  A movie ticket costs $6.75. A drink costs $1.90. Popcorn costs $2.25. What is the total cost for a ticket, a drink, and popcorn? Use mental math. Answer: $10.90

Assignment  Pg. 29-31 # 7-18, 47-55 odd
