7 Ordinary World Who is Mufassa? Is he a good king, father?
Simba—what archetype is he? Rafiki—what archetype is he? Zazu—what archetype is he? This slide should be shown after Zazu says, “Make him a throw rug.”

8 Call to Adventure Could Scar’s talk with Simba be a Call to Adventure? If so, how does this change our understanding of the story? Is the archetypal wheel inverted now? Who becomes a Threshold Guardian? Show when Simba and Scar talk the first time. Simba receives a call to adventure, but the nature of the adventure will lead him to destruction, to the destruction of the ordinary world. It is only from the ashes of failure that Simba can arise the hero he is destined to become. Surabi.

9 Threshold Guardian What role does Zazu play?
What often follows when we fail to heed advice? What archetypal mask does Simba wear to evade Zazu’s supervision? Zazu is the Mentor. He wears the mask of a Threshhold Guardian. Simba must become a trickster to evade him.

10 Simba as Trickster What kind of king do you think this Simba might become? Is he tending towards the higher self or the shadow? What trait(s) push him in this direction? Humility and reason OR pride and naiveté Show this during the “Mighty King” song.

11 Crossing the First Threshold
Entering the elephant Graveyard What happens when we play close to the line? Do we have two forces action as threshold guardians?

12 Simba finds he is but a cub, not yet his father
Approach to the Inmost Cave Simba finds he is but a cub, not yet his father

13 Ordeal To succeed, Simba must recognize his enemy.
Does he make this step or fail? What is the price of narrow vision? Of naiveté?

14 Ordeal The Mentor and Shadow
What makes Scar a villain? His ambition, his desire for personal glory, or his lack of concern for the greater community? How about all of these? Show in the elephant graveyard as Scar begins his song.

15 Ordeal Definition of a Shadow

16 Shining in justice Shining injustice

Show when Scar tells Simba that it was Simba’s fault Mustaffa is dead. As an innocent, Simba is not at fault but has been manipulated. Scar’s suggestion becomes the shadow figure within Simba’s mind and is the Threshold Guardian that bars the door on Simba’s self-actualization.

19 Separation not Return Simba’s departure signals his new role as a lost soul, a failed hero. But hope springs eternal. Show when the hyenas are picking out thorns. Transition for second comment.

20 Flight Simba’s flight signals the end of the mini-journey of Simba the heir. But a new journey begins. But what kind is it? Simba becomes a Lost Soul.

“Please don’t throw me in that briar patch.” Does the briar patch serve as a protective barrier? The briar patch becomes an unexpected ally.

22 Lost Soul What is the importance of geography in providing a threshold for this new journey? How might geography symbolize Simba’s plight? The briar patch and the desert provide a protective barrier by the very nature of its harshness. Not even the hyenas will venture forth. They are threshold guardians barring Scar’s minions.

23 Lost Soul buzzard-bait
When our spirit reaches its lowest point, the time is right to resurrect a hero. But it will take time. It is not until Simba rises from his own ashes in the desert and is allowed to mature that he is ready for the task for which he was born.

24 Special World Slimy yet satisfying
What is the function of this Special World in which Simba lives? Is it merely a diversion? Hakuna Matata? The purpose of Timon and Pumba’s Paradise is to provide a time and place for Simba to mature. When the Herald comes, he will be ready.
