2 GeoConnections, Introduction GeoConnections is a national partnership initiative led by Natural Resources Canada. Through GeoConnections, governments are working with industry to build the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI) –make Canada's geographic ("geospatial") databases, tools and services readily accessible via the Internet.

4 Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure Implemented through GeoConnections programs: Access – a partnership program to make geo-info in government agencies accessible via the Internet. Framework Data – a national foundation to enable applications development and value added. GeoPartners – a federal-provincial/territorial partnership program to facilitate data sharing GeoInnovations – industry-partnership program Sustainable Communities National Atlas of Canada Geomatics Skills Network

7 The Five Policy Thrusts of GeoConnections Access Data: Making geospatial data accessible on the Internet 24 x 7. Framework Data: for new information products. Geospatial Standards: for the global marketplace. Partnerships: with government, the private sector and the academic community. Supportive Policy: at all levels of government.

8 GeoConnections Funding January 24, 2002 12 projects are receiving a total of more than $1.7 million in funding through GeoConnections –announced Herb Dhaliwal, Minister of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), today. – GeoConnections is a $60-million, five-year initiative of government, industry and academia, led by NRCan, to put Canada's geographic information on the Internet.

9 Role of GeoConnection Partners One of the strengths of GeoConnections is its ability to encourage funding from other sources. –For example, its investment of more than $6.7 million under GeoInnovations, one of the seven GeoConnections programs, has encouraged nearly $10.5 million of additional partner funding, for a total of more than $17.2 million in technology development.
